    1969 Undercoating removal

    Gentlemen-

Seeking advice on removal techniques for 1969 S undercoating.

My car, with many parts date stamped as 03/69, I surmise as an early 69. I may have the build date paperwork, have to dig for that later.

I have it stripped down for transport to the paint shop, and thought it prudent to remove the existing undercoating since this will be a full and complete restoration, but the existing material on the underbody is unlike anything I have come across. Scraping seems to not be an option (and its not like I have gone soft, I can still keep up with the little German girl on P90X!). Putty knifes are literally useless. 1" wood chisel and hammer- nothing but dents. Rust wheel, wire bursh, etc., zero impact. 10 minutes with a reciprocating tool gives me a quarter size patch of steel and a headache. Goo gone, goof off, gas, acetone, MEK... nothing. Seriously.

I humbly await any suggestions, and thanks!

Perhaps you should look into Dry Ice Blasting.

You absolutely do not have original undercoating if it is that hard to remove . Dry ice will not work . Try paint remover .

I used a heat gun and chisel, worked well. I also used a multi tool with limited success.

It reads that some one else already stripped it in the past and applied new material. It reads as its good stuff ..

You could use what my mentor used BUT I’d STRONGLY advise against it as he burned the car and part of his garage down. He used a torch to melt it off. Problem was the owner of the car didn’t show up that night to help and Barry forged ahead. As a result he caught something inside the car on fire and that was the point of no return. Barry was fearless and head strong! This was also told to me 20 plus years ago by his now widow. I can’t remember all the details exactly but that was the just of it.

Heat gun and a scrapper on our 69S. Lots of sweat equity.

Try a Multi-Purpose Oscillating Tool with a scraping blade together with a heat gun

    why not...leave it alone?

It sounds like it's well bonded to the metal and doing its job. I was under the understanding it can be painted over.

    Maybe it looks poorly ??
