for the heat gun ..... they are not all created equal .... you need to find the hotest one.
It should make the undercoat smoke. So make sure you wear respirator or do it outside.

Hi pressure waterjet blasting...8 hours work to strip a whole chassis including parts and most of the rust will disappear too!

Thank you all for your responses and suggestions! I am excited to get this project started...
It seems that serious heat is the last thing I have not attempted, and I will do that with an abundance of caution, assistance and ventilation.
And thanks for the suggestion to leave the undercoating. It seems logical to me since it is so securely attached, factory or not. I do know it is of reasonably uniform thickness front to back, and up both rear fender wells. There are some areas that will still need to be removed, specifically around a few of the 3" holes in the floor pan where a few of the filler plates started to rust and lift, but in those places it comes off MUCH easier. I think I will address the minor issues, touch up with the Wurth period correct approximation from Stoddard and gloss black it all for a final seal.
So... another question (and maybe this should be its own unique thread? First time to post on a forum..) is that the doors both show similar aging, correct color, etc. but one side had the rectangular sound deadening panels in, and one side didn't. Is this common?
This is your friend.....an oscillating tool with different attachments.
This will take off any kind of undercoating.
It does take some time and you need to clean and sharpen your scraping blade a bunch, but it will get the job done.
On a recent 914 project, I used a tool like this to remove all the sound deadening material on the inside of the
along with all the undercoating on the bottom.
After this, is was a simple matter to media blast the remainder off of the metal.

your door may have had a visit from a skilled body man ..... removing that tar sheet is the first step in hammer and dolly work for removing door dents.
