Help needed: 915 Transmission with Cable Speedo - Removal Q

Dropping my early 915 transmission and it appears the speedometer cable at the front of the transmission is very hard to get to. Questions:

    • Any crafty tips for removing the (27mm?) cable nut without having to pull off the transmission mounts and crossmember?
    • Is there enough slack in the speedo cable to drop the tranny enough to get a wrench on the cable nut from the side? Doesn't look like that's possible.
    • Finally, am I stuck supporting the transmission and removing the mounts and crossmember bolts to get to the cable nut?

    Thanks. Picture below.

...turns out taking off the crossmember is pretty easy. And finally put that fancy German 27mm flare nut wrench to use. Double win!

And be careful, the threaded casting for speedo brake off a lot more than they should. A leaky wet trans in this area is your friend.
