    Roger Mudd . . .

    . . . has passed-away

I always remembered him as the Guy who was supposed to take over for Walter Cronkite, on CBS . . .

. . . but moved over to NBC when Dan Rather got the nod

Finished his career on the History Channel

For me? --- just about the Ideal Journalist . . . calm, authoritative, soft-spoken, impartial --- always business

    Also, always sounded --- + looked . . . the same

Roger was a descendant of Dr. Alexander Mudd who was convicted of harboring and treating John Wilkes Booth after the assasination. This let to the saying ‘his name is mudd’. Dr. Mudd was later pardoned by Pres. Andrew Johnson but his conviction stood.

End of an era... reportage and journalism of the highest caliber, without a hint of partisanship. His contemporary, the equally estimable Sander Vanocur died a couple of years ago.

Now the public either suffers or cheers (depending on their infotainment bubble of choice) news "personalities" delivering a steady diet of polemical trash - look how well that's worked out.
