    looking for a scissor lift

    Hi Everyone,

I do not have enough height, nor is my pad thick enough for a two post lift. I am looking to add a scissor lift to my garage to help with projects and general car stuff. I have heard some things about issues removing an engine on a scissor lift. Is that all or just certain models? being able to use it while doing engine removal is a requirement.

Is there a brand people recommend that allows easy engine removal? Bendpak and Atlas are two i am looking at but open to other brands.

    thanks!

    Hi HH,
Take a look on the Costco site. Several to chose from, starting at $1200.00 including delivery.
Delivery fees are usually pretty high.

Harry, you will need to check the distance between the ramps to be sure they are spaced far enough apart to clear the engine. It is a very wide engine. Height may be an issue as well, but I suspect they all lift to a sufficient height.

Another option to consider, if you have the height at your door and ceiling, is a 4 post lift ( you don’t have to raise the vehicle all the way to the top.) Most come with a set of removable casters that would allow you to roll the lift out of your garage where you could achieve full height when desired.

my pad isnt thick enough for a 4 post lift. I am also looking for something not as permanent, and movable.

Are you 100% sure quickjack is tall enough?

    Harry:

You don't need a car lift to change engine. In fact, I have one but never used it to R&R engine. Jack up rear using tall jack stands under each swing arm pivot, Throw another jack stand in Center for safety, and add wheel chocks front and rear of front tire. Remove center license plate panel. I then use a Pittsburgh Automotive 1500 lb. Aluminum ATV / Motorcycle Lift that you can get at Harbor Freight or elsewhere to remove and install the engine. I cut a 2x6 to place between the two padded sections.

I have removed an engine enough times with jack stands to know how to do it. honestly im sick of feeling sketchy using jack stands. That and i want something thats easier to use on all of my cars. also i like the height of a lift because its easier to work under.

I want a lift for many reasons, but i want to make sure i have one that does it all - including the engine removal that i have read people struggle with. I dont want to spend 2K on a lift to find out the hard way i cant do everything.

Harry, having removed and replaced as many Porsche engines as you have you are right to question whether the QuickJack has sufficient lift. Heck no. A lift height of less than 18 inches which the Quick Jack has comes no where near to what is needed. Stay away for that use. It is great, however for tire and brake jobs.
