    I have built a relay kit myself for a different classic car more than ten years ago... it's hardly a novel idea.

    Not only is it not novel, but they are available in thousands of places on the internet in one form or another. Fog light or headlight relays that switch fused battery current directly to lights has been common since the mid seventies when fog lights and driving lights first became the rage. Any 12 V relay can be adapted. The art is in making it look OEM or hiding it so that looks don't matter.
