    Looking for Tire Suggestions for My '68 911L...

    Gents,

    I'm looking for suggestions for the best tires to put on my original 5 1/2 x 15 Fuchs wheels that Harvey Weidman refinished before he sadly lost his workshop in the California fires last year. Now that we're about to wrap up the full body and paint restoration on my numbers matching 1968 911L, my plan is to drive this awesome car from #1 condition to #2 with a lot of fun miles adding some personal patina along the way .

    I'm not looking for concourse tires that will look perfect, I'm looking for tires that will look right on Harvey's restored Fuchs and will be good driver's tires as I put more miles on it. Thanks for your thoughts, and as always I appreciate the collective wisdom and deep knowledge of this community!

    Vredestein Sprint Classic's is what I am running on my '68 911L. Great classic euro look, and seem to perform well.

    Also interested in the #'s on your car, as mine is also a blood orange 68L, number 11805099, engine 3280343, with a build of 10/67. Cheers!

    You bet, I'm a few months behind you of out of the factory. I've got chassis #11805200, Engine #3280766, and a build date of Feb 13, 1968, which was 4 days before I was born .

    Very cool! I am actually running the Vredestein Sprint Classic in 185/70 HR.15 size. (As you can see I am repainted in 936 Silver Metallic, and I have a series matching motor, but not numbers matching)

    That's a beautiful '68, cograts. I see that you scraped off those horrible 1968-only side reflectors, can't say I blame you! Here are a few pics of mine. These were taken in 1972 when my uncle bought this car as the second owner in Walnut Creek, CA. I bought it from him in 1992 when I got married, so it's been part of our family for 49 of its 53 years! I should wrap up the paint work and get it back on the road in a few weeks, so I'm just looking to throw the right tires on it to complete the restoration so i can drive the snot out of it . I'll post up a final thread on the project once I'm back on the road, and thanks for the info on your tires.

    Super, thanks. Out of curiosity, what size are you running? Looks like the 1968 factory spec on the 5 1/2 x 15 Fuchs was 165 R 15, but I'm hearing some folks are running Pirelli Cinturato CN 36's in 185-70-VR15 fitment. Would love to see a pic of your car on the Vredesteins if you've got one ...

    Thanks all, this was fantastic help and I learned a lot more about the different options out there than I had anticipated. Before I pinged you guys I was initially leaning towards the Cinturato’s, but after hearing everyone’s input here and considering all the different options, I’ve decided to go with the Michelin XAS’s in the original 165 VR 15 fitment.

    My goal has always been to enjoy this awesome car by driving it and enjoying with our family. This car has been part of my family since 1972 and under my care since 1992, and like my uncle before me I’ve always maintained it as original as possible. I’ve remained committed to maintaining the car’s originality with this body and paint restoration project, all the way down to keeping the goofy 1968-only side reflectors . With that in mind, I think that the XAS’s will look exactly right and be most period correct on the 5 ½ x 15 Fuchs that Harvey restored so beautifully for me. I was close to going with the XWX’s, but I really want to maintain the same look and stance of the car from the day it rolled off the factory floor on February 13, 1968. While I frankly don’t think I can lose either way, the XAS’s are N0 rated and in the end I’ve opted for the more original looking XAS’s versus the more planted feel of the XWX’s.

    Thanks again for all the great into on this super-deep tire thread, and I’ll make sure to pop up an update once I get the tires installed and pick up the car in a few weeks when all the work is finally complete.

    I don't think you could have gone too far wrong with any of the choices mentioned here. But if family drives and period/original looks are part of the criteria, I think you made the best choice.

    Here's hoping the XAS are actually available and in stock right now!

    Ahhhh the sixties... I envision myself one early Saturday morning wearing plaid shorts, black shoes with white socks smoking a cigarette heading to the hardware store to buy a bag of nails.
    SWB cars are an acquired taste however once acquired theirs no turning back.
