    engine stamping

    Would anyone mind telling me what this engine stamping means? It seems obvious it could mean a 1987 3.2 specification, but I am never surprised to learn that Porsche numerical schemes are not what they seem. Thanks.

    I believe week 32 of 1987 as casting date.

    I agree with Chris; it is a casting date.
    One thing that you will need to understand is the difference between stamped numbers and cast-in numbers. Most of the numbers on cast metal parts are cast-in numbers such as part #'s and dates or logos. Stamped numbers are rare and are generally either serial #'s or type #'s.

    Great -- that's helpful to know. I was using the wrong terminology, but moreover have dated the engine case.

    Some have referred to my 3.2L as a short stroke -- seems like this is usually considered a long stroke (74.4mm), though not as long as a 3.6/3.8L ?

    pre '72 at 66mm stroke
    first long strokes: '72+ 2.4L to 3.0L at 70.4mm stroke
    3.2L at 74.4mm stroke
    3.6/3.8L at 76.4mm stroke

    Please feel free to correct me -- trying to learn here.

    The 66 & 70.4 cranks can be swapped between the early cases, but I don't think the newer cranks will fit.
    Probably the 74.4 and 76.4 cranks can be swapped in their respective cases. So long and short cranks for the two different designs?

    my understanding is that a 3.2SS is usually 98mm pistons w/ a 70.4mm crank. but maybe there are other configurations to arrive at the 3.2SS setup as well.
