This not off topic at all as these are words that apply to Porsches and Porsche parts that can and do affect their value greatly. It's a big mis-step to transfer this thread. I think you missed the context.

John, I hear you however the Moderators seem to deem what ever they feel a post is about and its placement.
Whilst many would consider your OP topic relevant to the General Info Section obviously others don't.
I pull Peter up about this on a painfully regular basis and he is clearly out of his field a lot of the time and his decisions to "Edit or Shift" peoples posts displays this.
Great topic for everyone to express their views, shame about it now being OFF TOPIC.

Thanks Mark. Yeah, we started off joking around but my intent was to steer it to a more serious discussion about what these terms meant in the strict context of cars, Porsches specifically. For example, I can't stand, and have never used, the word rare to describe something I was selling. What the hell does rare mean? Expensive? And what the hell does vintage mean?

In the Airstream world, where I spend time, the meaning of vintage is pretty well agreed on - 25 years old or more. But then there is the "real" vintage, which is considered to be trailers manufactured in the 60's.

Do we have a clue what a "vintage Porsche" is? Is it only 356's? Is it longhoods or earlier? Is the air cooled era? I think it would be worthwhile to either agree these terms are meaningless and thus worthless or to try and assign the some kind of definition in the context of Porsches.

    Cheers,
    John

John, I am with you 100% on your view on this topic.
Here in NZ things are a little more basic. If a car is over 20yrs old it is classified as a "Classic"
I have a lot of stuff pertaining to Porsche be it "OLD" Scheel seats to MoMo Steering wheels.
Now this is where ESR and the Moderators get frustratingly annoying.
Is an old Stacked MoMo wheel a 911 part? Do I advertise it in For Sale/Wanted Other Porsche Cars and Parts or For Sale 911 Parts.
Now whilst this is shifting from the OP what I am trying to express is the frustration caused when our posts are Moderated and Shifted into the (dark corner) especially when many Members have replied to it when in its OP location.
At the end of the day what is the definition of a Forum ,,,a meeting or medium where ideas and views on a particular issue can be exchanged.
Now, how is it that your very relevant post is now "OFF TOPIC"
Peter, shift it back to it original placement in General Info please.

My favorite of all time, "cherry". I had a guy tell me one time that a 65 912 wasn't "cherry" enough.

I think a SWB PORSCHE 911 is `vintage ' compared to a LWB PORSCHE 911. And the rust is always free.....on both
To err is human; to blame it on someone else is more human...

I never really thought much myself of the term "vintage". I guess it's one of those words which isn't really defined and can have a different meaning to anyone. For me as a momo collector, i could see any pre-dated momo as a vintage one. Same thing goes for the term "rare" in my case. Not meaning that any pre-dated momo is a rare wheel, but again, i do have my own consideration of what is a rare wheel. The real question imo is: who buys something going forth on an adjective? I hope when you're buying stuff, people at least know what they're buying. If not, that would be like buying a pair of shoes because the ad says "comfiest shoes ever"...
Overthinking it, when listing something for sale, i can see why rare my not be the best word to use in a title. But personally, i don't see a real problem with using the term vintage. For example, when selling a 350mm prototipo, it can be an easy way of saying it's an older type and not a recent one. I don't see the word vintage value up a wheel more than when saying 60s or 70s. But sure, some people like to misuse terms like NOS/vintage/rare. It's usually the people who like using them as superlatives, e.g. "uberrare" "super rare".
