It’s pretty simple it was a spare part sale. I have a proper muffler on my 73S dated 1984.

So is it possible it was in a 74 2.8? Or as Hugh says just a spare part for cars when original units fail?

I believe the latter is exactly what Hugh is saying....
In all my references the '74 RSR's had 911/74 or 911/75 type - 95 x 70.4, 3.0 liter (2994 cc) engines (MFI or MFI Slide Valve respectively)

    Hope this helps,

The 74 2.8 would have come with a black center dot from the factory iirc.

There was no 2.8 factory engines after 73. 74: Carrera 2.7 MFI , RS 3.0 MFI , IROC 3.0 HBF and RSR 3.0 Slide valve. Only IROC and RSR would the 10K tack. Your tack was sold as a spare part for 68 911R, 911ST, RSR up thru 73 2.8. It’s OK to have an original 10K tack, but it’s not original to 73 or earlier production. Here is an original R tack, refinished, how is it different than yours.

If it is a factory replacement what does that actually mean? Was it actually for the car and someone bought it to replace the tach in their car for whatever reason? I appreciate the help!
As with all MY cars Porsche, they continued to have spare parts built and distributed to support cars on the road or the track. Your tach is a genuine 'in period' part which is a good thing. I wouldn't sweat trying to prove that it came out of an actual RSR. As an honest assessment of the conversation to date, it seems to me an attempt to assign a little more gravitas before determining a selling price.

Since it was purchased over the counter as a spare, it's just as likely that some hot rodder put it in their 911T with flairs and chairs. Again, not a bad thing and I wouldn't kick that tach out of bed for eating crackers.

Thanks for all the information. Someone keeps telling me it should have a black center dot and I am not sure I know what is meant by that?
