Over the last 18 years involved in this hobby, I’ve experienced and shared many many horror stories of restauration shops acting badly (to say the least) and illegally. I’m always surprised to see how little is written about it...

Stolen engine, fake chassis number, bad restorations, huge delays, and unexpected eye-watering bills, to name a few...

I know most of us get into the hobby with so much passion, it blinds us from common sense, but a keen and passionate client shouldn’t justify the abuse....

These are tough situations because unless you're a lawyer or your brother is a lawyer the cost of hiring an attorney and court costs will far outweigh the value of the motor. My advice would be try and get anything out of the shop owner, another core motor, or something of loosely comparable value, the more time that goes on the more he will dig in his heels and give up nothing, feeling that he has been put out by all this hassle. Though it's a hassle of his own making, but people tend to not see it that way. They just want you to go away, and early in these situations they will sometimes offer something to make this happen.

    update -3-

today the grace period agreed time ended at noon. I thought, well, let them have lunch and check back on them the afternoon. I did call, left a note and did receive a call back at quarter to six.
„…the engine re-appeared..we found it…!!“ i heard and me happily and astonished chimed in with a „…wunderbar..!“

The engine tins have been gone, he does not know where these are or what had happened. The engine is said to have been sitting all the time at the exteriour storage facility, where parts do get a makeover!!???whatever this term means.?!

He wants to look for a complete set of tins until friday and give me a call back..

Honestly, I am far off from being convinced…but hopefully …lets see

I wouldn't wait for friday, I would go there now and get my engine back with or without tins.

I strongly recommend that you make the trip and pick up your engine sans tins. Consider it a tax on what had the makings of a much more challenging situation.

If you can’t go, how about a picture in the morning? If it’s there it will be there Friday as well?

    Hope it all ends well.

    @all,
the shop owner is now doing the „power game“, knowing I will never be a customer again.
So he is not proactive calling and telling: ready to pick-up.
I will drive there latest tuesday!

    I already stated:
As I had spiritually seperated already from the engine, I am quite relaxed now.
in the first place it was „theft“ - if he tries now to alter any components of the engine, it is an obvious betrayel.
I have a very engaged lawyer from our porsche community, having a very nice collection, being ready to sue him, as he also said: he then has to learn a lesson!

    I ll report back…

    enjoy your sunday

    stay safe&healthy
