Thread: Amber fiberglass engine shroud color?

  1. #1

    Amber fiberglass engine shroud color?

I've seen several vendors sell amber fiberglass 911 engine shrouds, that certainly are intended to give that period racing look. However, they all seem to be quite clear fiberglass (including the one I have on my car) rather than actually the correct amber color. I've also seen photos, primarily of old race cars, where the shroud is a more opaque, yellow ochre sort of color, quite different than the colorless transparent examples I've seen for sale. At first I though it was the age of the fiberglass, but I notice that Rod Emory and a few others have proprietary fiberglass pieces that mimic the old race pieces perfectly, and they are definitely new pieces.
So... How and where do I find the less transparent, more period correct, more opaque colored fiberglass shrouds?

i think they either found a way to age it (maybe leave it in the sun?) or that they may have used a transparent lacquer?

I think Damon at Series 900 make the best amber colored shrouds. His products are all very high quality in terms of fit and color.

    Agree 1000%.
No one else comes close to the "amber" color in my view.
Recently build a 2.7 MFI engine and the fan shroud fit very nicely as well.

These seem pretty close, certainly closer to most of the others available. Pretty much the right color, but still more transparent than what I've seen on some race cars from the period. I've found with so much transparency, dirt, brake dust, etc. get sucked up inside from the fan, and darken the inside of the shroud, rendering it very dark gray etc.

Another option, seems to be another animal altogether, to my eyes.....

Yes, that is the set I have. I don't think it is close to original, and honestly it is so transparent it shows so much dirt it either becomes just a dark grey or you have to open it up and pressure/solvent wash it clean periodically. Maybe I just drive my car too much!

Thanks for the observation. It does look a little clearer than others. Quality looks good though!
