John, these unique riveted reflectors, were they silver coated as well? I have a 1.72 MY H4 and looks like painted silver. Also read somewhere else they were black, but not much reflection from it I presume, so not sure if that is correct. What does your experience say?

Hi Cees, trust all is well with you? Intriguing you say H4 1-72 ? The H4 was only introduced for 911 in March 1972 — this is the factory tech information announcing it in a period Porsche publication thst I have among my papers. Name: 4D5CFBA3-2353-4113-B1D5-D386290C7B47.jpeg

I’m told H4 (with or without the extra parking light) were never legal on 911 in USA so ones on cars delivered there maybe for most-part fitted out-with the factory so some of them may not be best for original authenticity reference.

The originals and a spare I have are correct without parking bulb but are RHD so have different part number — maybe not an authenticity reference to you either. However is silvered on these original that have the old Bosch sticker with part and Bosch date code stamped decodes to 72.

All well Steve, tnanks. Actually I just bought the reflector and the weathered Bosch sticker on it says 221. I will try to upload a picture later. So no history to share about this one.

    Regards, Cees

Who knows the pragmatics just sounded earlier than I would’ve expected but could make sense. Maybe if what you have is an H4 unique part it had that Jan 72 date code sticker due to supply lead time and / or Bosch getting started to build inventory of the new lamp ahead of its March 72 introduction on row 911 per the tech document? If 221 was end of Jan 72 and assembly used at beginning of March it could be as short as (a little over over) 28 days ?

    H4

Guess so too. Or Porsche just used up all H1's before mounting H4's. Not sure if the same unit was used in other car makers H4 light units. Anyhow, here some pictures of the sticker and silver coloured reflector.

Sorry that this info is combined with discussion about Euro and Italian LWD turn signal housings

You can usually punch it out from the other side. May need to drill it.

    Thanks for the prompt reply.

So, it sounds like it would be best to leave the reflectors alone (especially if NOS) or buy earlier housings. However, updating a car is not a bad thing to do, is it?

I personally wouldn't dismantle LWB RoW turn signals. They're very hard to find and sought after by owners. If you offer to trade them for U.S. you will have a line around the block.
