Specific differences between Euro and Italian LWB turn signal housings?

I recently bought an NOS Italian turn signal unit including the housing and the Italian-spec, silver-trimmed lens. I needed the lens so now I have the NOS housing without a lens and I'm trying to figure out the specific difference(s) between a Euro housing (901 631 402 03) and an Italian housing (901 631 402 05). To my (admittedly bad) eye, the Italian housing looks the same as the Euro. I found this thread where Cees speculates that the difference is in the harness and relates to the H4's and city lights illuminating at the same time.

Can anyone confirm that's the difference? If so, any ideas how I might make my Italian assembly function like a Euro assembly? I have no use for an Italian part right now but can always use good Euro turn signals.

Thanks, John. My understanding is that earlier versions of these lights have the part numbers on the back while laters do not (or is it vice versa?). Either way, I have several Euro turn signal housings that DO have the part numbers on the back.

It looks like yours does not have the glass reflector mounted on the city light holder.

Does it matter that your Euro light says USA all over it?

    Thanks, Rick

I think the castings are the same for both U.S. and RoW, just different for different periods. Thus the U.S. marking for DOT on theThe USA markings on the interior designate the bulb used in that slot. There is also a marking in CP for Row.

The main (only?) difference between the U.S. and RoW housings is the mounting of the small bulb. For the U.S. the bulb holder is molded in and on the outside end of the housing. For RoW that holder is filled in (easy to unfill) and there is a special bulb holder mounting on the interior end of the housing with the mousey wire to connect it.

Remember, in those days, Porsche was a very frugal company.

My Italian 73S , 10/72 build, has the then euro H4s with no city lights. The city lights are in the turn signal housing just like the Italian owners manual reads. My housings look like yours from the photo.

1973 H4's were unique for that reason, the only H4's not to have city lights. They are very hard to find. In addition to no hole for the city light they have a unique bulb holder and a unique riveted reflector.

As far as I know, original Italian front housing had 3 bulb sockets. Yours are probably Euro spec.

Do you have a NOS front left with part numbers on the back?

Quite sure mine are Italian as they came to me NOS with an Italian lens and in an original Bosch box with the correct Bosch part # for an Italian part.

I only have this side. I do, however, own 2 Italian-delivered LWB cars. I'll pull a lens and see what's what. In the meantime, still trying to learn the difference between Euro and Italian from a functionality perspective.
