Don't try to manually polish it, it's so thin that you'll go through and just make it worse. One trick I used to use on light reflectors was a solution of isopropyl alcohol with just a little salt added. I would swirl the solution around in the reflector and empty. Not 100% back to original but, usually a solid improvement. The grains of salt provide the barest of abrasion to remove the oxidated layer. Better than using paint or chroming. Chrome is actually one of the worst things. It's far less reflective than one would think.
Thanks for the tip. I'll try that.

I followed with a quick rinse using DI water to make sure no salts are left. Use compressed air to dry, don't let it air dry cause even DI water will spot a little. Also, it was a bit trial and error for me,,, I wouldn't start with a NOS unit. Practice on a used unit to see if you can bring back some of the shine.

Would you be willing to part with the Left Side housing? Or both? These are correct Italian housings and I’m in the process of restoring my ‘72 Italian delivered Targa S, from Centro Balduina Porsche Rome. I have the right hand housing but not the left. When imported into the US in ‘78 the housings were swapped to US spec units. I have the three original units but sure would love to have the left. Tyler

    Reviving this thread...

Back to the question about the finish on the insides of Italian front housings - I doubt the one pictured in post #1 is oxidized because if you compare with Jaudette's pictures in post #2, you'll see the outside of the housing is very weathered and worn whereas the inside still has some remnant of bright silver with some bubbling here and there.

My NOS front right is Italian and it looks exactly the same as the one in post # 1, clean matte everywhere with no bubbling.

I could be wrong but I think the matte finish was for the Italian market because their front lenses were clear transparent (bright silver would be too bright for clear lenses)

    Just my 2 cents.
