Top 3 tips for building a new 20 car garage

A friend and I are starting to each plan out our own individual 20 car garages. Most of the cars will be Porsche. Would love advice on the top 3 things we should think about please. Any rules of thumb such as square feet per car?

All advice and resources welcome. Want to do this well and right. Measure thrice, cut once if possible.

The beauty and aesthetics of a garage are almost as important at the contents to us.

Start by hiring a very good architect!

1) Start out by writing down - and collecting pictures and ideas - what you want the space to be and how you would like to use. Big difference between a functional workshop and a museum-like display in how you design, layout, light, etc.

2) Get an architect if you build from the ground up or an experienced interior designer with the relevant expertise. Pending on where you live, it is always good to have this help for all the work, code compliance and obtaining the necessary approvals and permits. Steven Harris would be an awesome choice if he is available, up for it and within your budget :-)

3) Hang all art on walls centered at the mid point of each art work - between 55 - 60 inches off the ground :-) It is mindboggling to me how shitty the art and decoration are hung and lit in most garages (And houses). I would prefer original art to old, lousy license plates and hub caps and crap like that ...

And check out Jeff Zwart's old place in Costa Mesa. To me, it was aesthetically the most beautiful, well designed, lit space to display and work on cars (Now the place of E-Motion Engineering).

1. On site or off site property will change the design considerably (Fire, Theft, Security, amenities). Plan accordingly.

2. Involve the significant other even if that person hates cars.

3. Plan to spend 20-30% over initial estimates.

Check with your insurance company; they hate concentration of risk by having too many valuable cars together. They will come out and visit so make them comfortable.

Check building codes for the location. Many jurisdictions would not permit you to build a non-commercial structure that large unless it is physically attached to your primary residence.

I guess it’s my lower middle class up bringing but I am once again realizing that my goals in life were not set high enough. I was happy as heck with the 3 car garage I am finally getting to create for myself …… loft over 2 bays and a high ceiling over the hobby car bay (lift ��) ... then I read this ! ……… 20 cars !!!! , when did that meno go out ? ……… I could have asked for a 20 car garage �� ?
