Thread: Windshield installation on 1976 Carrera 3,0

Windshield installation on 1976 Carrera 3,0

Hi to all, i have a quite long discussion with two reputable shops about how to installing the windshield on a 1976 Carrera 3,0-

One shop says you have to mount the dash and then put the windshield, as you can't screw the screws close to the windshield with the windshield fitted.

The other shop says that the only safe way to mount the windshield is without the dash, so there is enough space for the seal to cross the
metal lower body of the metal channel and to be real watertight , then the dash can go close to the seal after the windshield.

Is there any workshop manual that describe this procedure? i have some and even original porsches but nothing described and i have found Haines manual
a photo of the installing of the windshield without the dash.

Seems weird that if you crack the windshield you have to remove the dash, but... which is the real way??

Thank you to all for the help in clearing this discussion.

After the SWB cars dash R&R required windshield removal.

On 69+ cars the dash is installed before the windshield. The shop that told you "only safe way to mount the windshield is without the dash, so there is enough space for the seal to cross the metal lower body of the metal channel and to be real watertight" is incorrect.

if you want to see that the window has seated in the channel ( stringing it in is easy job so any window guy should not have a problem) you can take out the plastic air vents when installing and then put the air vents back in after you are done

This changed again for MY '87, and the dash can be removed on those late cars w/o windshield removal. But for 69-86, dash must be in first.

Thank you very much to all for the very expert analysis. "Excellence was expected" =)

Has someone any kind of original manual showing the procedure for the 76 Carrera or similar age cars?

I have the original workshop manual but can't find that of removal/refitting procedure for a windshield change, but should be mentioned somewhere, i would like an official manual to show... Thank you!!

I think you have to go back to the first 911 manual to see windshield install. Porsche only only showed new items in each succeeding manual, if it hadn't changed you were expected to go back to earlier manual.

God only knows what pdf you have but the real manuals are still available from Stoddard and occasionally used in the classifieds. I would like to think your "shop" has a set too! You need volume II for the Body section. B 47 will tell you that starting with the 68 model year the windshield must be removed prior to removing the dash. You can also go to B 19 for 3 pages on how to properly install the windshield. I would find a new shop with experience in these cars.

I think that change occurred in '86, actually.
