    Speedometer cable repair

After bouncing around for the last year my speedo cable has broke on my 1971 911T.
I assume you can't replace just the cable and must replace the complete cable housing. Is there aftermarket cables that will work or do I have to use a Porsche part. I assume this is a tough job and I was wondering is there is a link that may help me in this repair.
    Thanks in advance.

I used north hollywood speedometer for my new cable. Yes, it was the whole cable with housing.

John, it's a tedious job in a completed car. I just did this on my '71T, but it was relatively simple because I was just dealing with a shell which was on a lift. The cable route is from the speedo into the trunk; from the trunk into the driver footwell; from the footwell into the center tunnel; through the tunnel, out the rear of the tunnel to the tranny. My recommendation would be to disconnect the cable from both ends; from the tranny, pull the cable rearward (feeding the front end through the trunk and into the footwell). At this point, attach a wire to the cable that can be used to pull the new cable back through the tunnel. Then continue pulling rearward through the tunnel. You will probably have to remove the tunnel carpet and access cover to guide the cable through. Having a helper would be a bonus. Others may have differing strategies or tips. Good luck!

    John,
If the cable has broken in two pull it out of both ends. There is a chance the cable housing is still useable. If so have a new cable made. There is a guy here in Denver who can make you a new one. I suspect there are others. Mine broke 10 years ago. I had him make me two so I would have a spare. I'm still running the first one and it still runs smooth.
