Hot start relay? (Is that a thing)

We did a great 500+ miles loop this last weekend and had to get push started by two cowboys in Darby Montana. After about three hours of driving in mid 80s temps we stop for dinner, and after, went out to fire her back up we had nothing. Happened again and the wife and I had to do the same. All other times fired right back up just fine.

So I’ve had to do these remote hot start relays in several of my old Volkswagens but have never heard of it in an early 911. Is this common for them as well? I don’t mind a bandaid in those old vw’s, but don’t really want to do that the Porsche. With all the records I have for my car I still don’t know how old the starter and solenoid are. Suppose that could be an issue as well. Heat soaked solenoid...?

    Thanks..

Definitely a thing in 912s, I have one installed in my car. It protects your ignition switch from carrying the load and your starter. It's a cheap insurance as you can do one for the price of a relay and a few wires... I also replaced my starter with a high torque unit (I am not a concours person, car is a driver)

    Thanks mathieulecomte for the reply.

Very clean install. Where'd you pick up the high torque starter from?

One of my cars rarely started hot.
For me solution one was, I would tap the starter with a crow bar, while someone turned the key.
Which lead me to, solution 2, drill a hole in the back seat (just the metal), (just above starter)and by myself I could tap the starter with a big screwdriver.....while turning the key. Worked every time.

Solution 3, I took the starter and solinoid all apart, filed some bent/deformed metal. Cleaned and greased. And that worked from then on.
    For 15 yrs.

That's a WOSP unit Ref #LMS-1102 - I wrote to the company to have details and ended up buying from Stoddard 250$, it's a great unit (both 912/911), and lighter. I kept the original unit and will refurbish it over the winter.

I am with Matt for the high torque…
replaced two Bosch units, had one rebuilt…ended all at a push start with short runway in a hotel underground garage..

Since the high torque unit is installed…never ever again any issues…
ok, the sound of the high torque …hmm but humans get used to almost everything

for back up I do have a direct line from the trunk to the starter….in any case my ignition lock will fail…with a start switch….

Down here with our hot summers I've found that using the Bosch SR68X 1.5 h.p. starter has eliminated hot start problems. Many choices,,,,

Thanks Ed. One site I looked showed the Bosch SR68X for 71-73. Probably be fine for a 69 as well wouldn’t you think..?
