here is another one for you Eric at the Hockenheimring for the 1968 reveal of the race team
It is a different one though as this one has a S-YZ plate placing it as about a 1966 car (about same vintage as 911R proto 1 and 2) and the one in the Monte team photo has a LEO- EA plate

From the 908/2, looking through some books and pictures....I'm go'na guess 1969....

I agree with Chuck
An early 908/2. Cant tell the vin as they all looked similar although there were minor differences. The ones at Sebring in March 69 did not have the two small tail flaps that this one had. The twin flaps were in use by May 69 at the Targa Florio, maybe earlier, but not at Sebring in March. Many had an extra hole each side on the nose next to the lights that this one did not have but these extra holes seem to be track specific rather than vin or time specific as they were on the earliest versions as well. Also to make it more complicated the various chassis were updated with aero all the time so these pointers are more for a time than a vin number
The early versions of the livery (ie March / April 69) were all white and had that shell logo in black
Also many can only be identified from the identification stripe of color across the front and even then that could change. The color on the front between the lights was more a feature in the first few months (March / April 69) than later on (May / June 69) when much more color was used either right across the nose or down the length of the cars
So I would say early 69 is most likely

Chuck, Hugh and Jon,
Thanks for the input.
Here’s a shot of 917-001 that might have been taken around the time of the color photograph on page 8. Other shots from the same book show it has the Shell, Dunlop, and Cibie stickers on the side with the Porsche side script.
There are a few additional 911s in view including a coupe with license plate S-L 5043 and a targa with a partial plate of S-J and a rear wiper. There is just a sliver of another targa on the left of the frame that could be the targa shown on page 8 as well.
The 917 doesn’t seem to show a battery cut off switch on the left front fender consistent with pictures of the car at 917-001 at the Geneva unveiling in March 1969. There was a switch in this position in during the FIA visit in April 21st, 1969.
