So like, how much does not having the matching engine/transmission affect value on a car that's been repainted two different colors and has cleared 100k miles at least once...?

I'm no stranger to having pieces of drivetrain sitting on a shelf, but an engine and transmission sitting around for decades might be a bit onerous to manage...I don't ever plan to sell, but of course, plans change...

It’s difficult to put an exact value on having your original matching numbers engine and transmission vs. not having them (and instead having an upgraded engine and transmission); if in the future you decided to sell, I would think that having the original matching engine and transmission (though not installed in the car) would be more desirable to a future buyer than not having it. In my case, I wanted to leave open the option/possibility of taking my car back to stock (as it came out of the factory) or in the case that I sold the hot rod, provide that option to the future owner; also, my original engine and transmission were already heavily used so I planned on keeping them crated up. Most likely, the engine and transmission would have to be rebuilt anyway so mileage and condition are not big considerations/factors for me. Hope this helps...

    Hm

One thing that hasn't been mentioned is The Budget. Pretty-much anything you may decide engine-wise will come down to money, at some point . . . as-much-as, if not-more-than, any bodywork, paint, or bangles you may care to acquire

Something else I'd highly recommend before you do anything $eriou$? . . .

. . . drive some cars --- the more, the better

We can bench-race this whole subject 'till the cows come home, but --- speaking from personal experience? . . . there's a pretty substantial difference between using/living with a 'short stroke' (66 mm) engine and a 'longer-stroke' (70.4 mm) one --- regardless of the transmission. Throw in compression, induction, cams, etc and you can go WAY down a rabbit-hole pretty fast

And it would really suck is if you don't like the results

So. I would drive someone else's Frankenst --- er, sorry, sorry . . . Hot Rod . . . before I pooped a bunch o' money on my own. Jus' sayin'

    And regarding 'matchingness'? --- don't kid yourself . . .

    . . . IMO . . .

. . . an OG case is worth WAY more in/next to/close-by the car it originally came with than absolutely anywhere else. Transmissions, too

Just ask anyone who's trying to find theirs

Highly endorse this. And talk/listen to owners. There are few people more willing to chew your ear off about the nuances of a car than an old man who owns a hot rodded long-hood.

Just two more cents on the shelf vs car thing, while there is something to be said for keeping the Porsche gods happy by keeping the engine on a shelf and near the car, my main point is it generally will be cheaper to find another engine, hopefully built to spitting distance of what you want, than to rebuild your own (particularly a 2.2). Plus, more freedom to subsequently trade up. Nothing would suck more than twin plugging your matching numbers 2.2 to realize that you want a 3.2. The nice thing about these cars is if you pay a fair secondary price, it tends to be lower than the cost to build, and provided you don't trash it, you can resell it somewhere near your cost.

The reason I bought the car was because of how much I love the blue, and how little work I need to do to the body (fingers crossed). I still haven't found any rust on the chassis, or evidence of collision damage. I ain't touchin' the paint; it looks fantastic.

The word "hot rod" is rather ambiguous...I don't intend to do anything to this car that isn't needed. I've driven it less than 100 miles and it's the most fun car I've ever owned...When something breaks, I plan to fix it better than factory. Beyond that...just keep it goin', mile after mile...

Congrats! Enjoy that beautiful ride! And signal orange is a great color when/if you decide to restore!

Did you take a close look with the air breather off? Everything OK there? Never got a satisfying answer why it's as janked up as it is..

I asked the previous owner('s son), and I don't think he really knew. It sure is knackered, though: https://www.early911sregistry.org/fo...e-to-my-intake

Carbs seem good, but I don't reeeally know what to look for. Seemed clean in the stacks.
