Question What have they done to my intake...?

I just picked up a 1970 911T. The carbs are Webers, and the airbox...I don't know what to make of this thing. It's plastic, which I think means it's not original, and it has been damaged and repaired by Mickey Mouse. I found a service manual for '72 and later cars, but not 1970, and it seems like this ventilation stuff is very specific to each year. Any tips are appreciated; I'm a bit boggled.

I'm hoping to answer two questions:

    1) What's the cheapest way to replace this thing? I don't plan to keep the Webers long-term, but this airbox isn't...filtering the air much, and the original plenums seem to cost a pretty penny.

    2) What are all these tubes? Do I need them all hooked up or what?

Right now I have the lowest port connected to a black tube that disappears into the bulkhead. I also have the large crankase vent from the oil filler attached to the metal "T". The other side is open...I'm guessing it attached to one of those two loose fuel(?) lines that run to the front of the car. I don't know which one...They were both unattached when I bought the car.

While I'm in here, what is that Br/R wire...?

What is this hole under the oil filter, and where does that orange tube come from??

    For your Disney+ amusement:

Didn't see this thread before I commented on your hot rod thread.

As I mentioned during the auction it looked from the pics that there had been a carb fire even though the Seller and prior owner's son said everything was kosher.

    Yeah, right..

So, the snorkel is correct for the plastic air breather but, the air breather is toast. Throw it in the bin or fully kill it with fire. I wouldn't even try to sort that thing or speculate on the hoses until you get a proper car-berated air breather.

Do you have any of the maintenance manuals? IF I was within reach of my 71 parts manuals I'd scan the page with the breather and vent hoses.

If you are not worried about originality you can run a set of PMO air filters with rain hats.

    I have a service manual for '72+, but I can't seem to find anything for a '70...

I'm cool with PMO air filters/hats if they won't impede smooth running. Do I have to do anything zany to the Webers to get them to fit? Do they have provisions for the various ventilation tubes running around...?

    i didnt read every detail.
but the plastic airbox is original. (tho, it may be for a 1971)(and a little patched up)
the webers you have look like the american made PMO carbs. PMO made some in the 70s. (they don't have 'made in italy' )
you probably don't need all those tubes...but my car has every one in the right place...and it is no hassle.
it doesn't take long to figure out which goes where.
the red hose would be just like that braided black one.
and the wingnuts would be black plastic.

Whoa, can you expand on this a bit? I think you are correct. There is a sticker in my engine bay from 1977 that says "PMO Conversion, California". I just assumed someone had sold off the PMOs and installed Webers. I guess there are several types...?

yes, then you have early PMO.

    this is what i remember.
I think the PMO guy (or people) is still alive in southern california. I think richard parr.
they made near identical copies of webers in the USA....i dont remember which state. I think because weber in italy closed their doors.
but i also heard weber allowed the copies to be made.
those PMOs do not have italy on them....just blank. and they have little dots from the casting...little pimples.
I have some in one of my cars...and i have the aluminum sticker, indicating the change...and the engine number, etc. I really like them...and have never had a problem.
everything weber is interchangeable....and there are several internet weber specialist....where you can get every part.
the new PMOs with the windows are new and not the same. i only know of 2 types...
i think there are a few threads on the PMOs here at earlySreg.
I would use the PMOs you have...they probably have very few miles on them...

Yup, having replacement carbs may verify the possible carb fire. Or not.

I'm looking to source another cleaner that will drop right in, which in my case is plastic. My box has two holes in the rear corners, which are presumably what tube 17 is about in this diagram...Anyone know what this tube attaches to? Fire-starting cold start lines?? On my car, they're unattached holes:

Note to self: The two braided tubes are from the fuel tank. One attaches to the small inlet on the metal fixture on the rear of the air cleaner. The other apparently attaches to the fan shroud. The purpose is to blow air through the fuel system and charcoal canister back into the airbox to be combusted...presumably to reduce emissions and smell. Seems a bit dubious, but my car does smell, so maybe I'll try hooking them back up...
