Thread: It's only original once: advice sought

Smile It's only original once: advice sought

I have a 1971 Targa T that has been an absolute delight in my first year of ownership. I'm still trying to arrive at a philosophy for tending to the car. I appreciate the patina and don't aim for perfection (the driven and enjoyed look works for me). Having said that, some aspects of the car are shabby and I have no problem correcting them (e.g, worn out floor mats). However, one item gives me pause: the Weltmeister decal. Should I replace it with a reproduction or keep it as is?

I've attached a photo of it. It looks original to me.

I have the feeling that I will regret scraping it off, but it also looks shabby (the glue is unevenly discolored and the decal has been rubbed away in spots).

Any counsel to manage the "it's only original once" aspect of these wonderful cars would be appreciated.

    Thanks in advance.

    Howard

I like it. I kept a couple original stickers on my car when I restored it and glad I did.

My '71 targa (10/70 build) has the decal in the lower right corner of the windshield. There was a discussion of the placement changing during the '71 production run - sorry, I couldn't find the thread - PrairieDriver, can you post your build date? Oh, and I vote: keep

Keep it! It is a miracle that so many of these cars survived 50 years and a testament to the love that they have engendered in their owners.

The best thing about owning a lowly T is that you can drive the snot out of it guilt free. I couldn't begin to imagine doing the things I do with my cars to a $200k S or a $500+k RS.

All of that said, do whatever you want...but if it helps, I'd be really envious of the sticker if I saw your car in the parking lot.

Keep it. 100x better than a perfect new one.

Like everyone else voted: Keep it. If only the decal could speak... lots of jaw-dropping stories during its 50 years of life
Currently in between Porsches. Sold my 73.5T Targa, now suffering from serious withdrawal symptoms. Attending Rennsport Reunion VI didn't really help getting over it.

Keep the sticker, and do not throw away anything. So even keep your old Floormats in Storage perhaps the next owner wants to put them back.

Replacing that sticker would be a crime against humanity.
