First ten chassis for each model?

Does anyone have any idea why for some of the models that Porsche never used the first 10 chassis numbers? What did they reserve these for? Prototypes, test mules, crash dummies?

It seems like Porsche often used arbitrary chassis numbers as prototype cars for the next years model, so it seems like it wouldn't be for prototypes.

    Any insights?

Interesting. I own 9118300015, which is a RoW 1978 911SC. I've often wondered how many were actually put out to the public before mine.

In many cases the factory renumbered old race cars with the first 10 reserved numbers as the cars evolved into new models.

Is there any books that describe examples of how the first ten cars were used in more details?

Dave, so old race cars had their chassis number changed to one of the first ten chassis numbers? Are there any good documented examples of this?

    Thanks!

    Hi guys
I own 119300002 it is a 69 S. The first owner was Dr Ferry Porsche and I am tryin to trace more history on the car. Might be the only one that before 10 that is still in existance as all other were test cars.....I have a post on the car will add some more things on there again this week. But its the 2nd car in 69 that is lwb and that has S calipers. We are also thinking that it has a complete prototype chassis due to door number that we cant trace.

Where did you get your info? I hadn't heard of that before. I own 354003, the third 67 912 built and it is of no special heratage. Maybe the "10" rule only applies to 911s ?

Harvey, I think the first 10 were probably reserved beginning in 1970. However I do know of at least one in 1969 that was a renumbered body.
