What are the small holes in front trunk area near VIN plate?

Hi all, for my 1973 911S restoration I am trying to figure out what to do with the small holes in the front trunk area (near the VIN plate, and mirrored on the other side). Picture is below, why do some cars have these and others do not? Which is correct for a 1973 911S?

My car has a bunch of holes so I am trying to figure out which are correct and which need to be closed off.

Picture was stolen from another thread, the small holes in question are circled.

My early '72T (8/71 build) does not have those holes. Original metal, never refinished.

That is for the brackets in case you have the plastic 85L Fuel tank. My 73S has the tank. The middle hole is for the screw holding a bracket on top of the tank, the two smaller ones have rivets to hold the base underneath.

Actually, it looks like all '73 models - T, E & S - had the holes, not just S. Both coupe and Targa. I suspect the plastic tank wasn't available prior to MY '73, so that's when the holes showed up.

Holes were only for the 85L plastic tank. Not all 73's have the holes.
    72S, 72T now ST
