Lightbulb Rallye Neige et Glace 13.-16. February 2022 France

    Hi all.
I'm looking to compete (or better participate) in the Rallye Neige et Glace that takes place in the French jura near Malbuisson.
If somebody wants to join, drop me a line - if we get 3 Cars we can enter as a Team until November 15th and take advantage of the Team discount.

    Why the neige et glace?
Quite simple they offer to drive the same routes with the same roadbook like the "regularity" guys but without the hassle of the regularity at your own pace without the stopwatch - this is what I'll do.
The non-timed group starts after the regularity group.
If you want to enter Regularity be aware that it is pretty sporty meaning averages of 44-47 kph on ice & snow. We've done on our trip in september averages of around 60 in dry weather conditions.
So if you're interested get in contact with me to work out the team.
Hardware requirements:4 Winter tires + at least 2 Studded tires
If running regularity: +Fire extinguisher +Medical test +Event License
Here a link to the event's homepage http://www.zaniroli.com/en/rallye-neige-et-glace/

    Cheers
    Uli

    So I did some preps.
Raised the car about an inch
    Softened the adjustable sway bars
Took out the 3,64 40% LSD and replaced it with a 4.1 60% Lsd
Had some rims blasted and painted
    Built a sump protection
Modified a roof rack to accept two wheels
Waxed the bottom of the car.
Built some Rallye stuff (Additional wire rope for the exhaust in case a rubber fails)
    Added more antifreeze
Lighter oil 10W40 instead of 15W50
I've just redone some stuff in the engine so I'll need to cover some miles before the trip. - Really looking forward to that - haven't been driving for 8 weeks now - I hope we get some snow for the holidays.
According to Parcel Service tomorrow two sets of winter tires should arrive...

Love what you are doing, and the enthusiasm, I wish I was with you.

What are the rims you are using for 13" and 14"?

Also, I was wondering what type of dimensions are used in Europe for tires... Are they inches?
Because that would seem weird... And if that is the case, inches, how did that happen?

    Current long term ownership: 63 Cab, 71 911, 74 914

Recap of Rallye Neige et Glace 2022 Day 1 Sunday

Ok so we returned home sound safe and a tad exhausted - I'll add some pics and clips and update this story every now and then.

Preps I did to the car in advance:
1 set studded Sess Tires Burzet http://www.sesstyres.com/1/upload/se..._2022_var1.pdf
    1 set winter tires TR-Ice
    Built a massive Sump protection
    Raised the car ~30mm
Changed the diff for final drive ratio 4.1 and 60% LSD with preload
Added some fixtures for an ipad, iphone, gopro
    Peltor Intercom
    Safetywired this and that
Added wire rope to prevent loss of mufflers
Electrical connector for tripy device https://www.tripy.eu/en/
Some towing loops so I don't have to dig in the snow - just in case.
A collection of tools and spares, washer fluid, towing ropes, shovel etc.

What I forgot to take along:
    Tyvek Coveralls

    Sunday.
We (René and me) drove a scenic route through Black Forest to the Peugeot Museum at Sochaux where the Rallye started. Filled the 100 liter tank to the brim with 100+ Octane at the station befoe entering france - 98 is not everywhere available in France.
Upon arrival we were guided to our parking lot - did the administrative stuff - technincal check - got the stickers on the car - installed the tripy device. This is all very well organized and streamlined you don't even have to put the stickers on yourself.
While strolling through the 90 odd participators cars I recognized that most of them were fully - seriously - rally prepped - not a weekend wannabe like mine.
Apart from some of the Minis, one or two Autobianchi A112s, a BMW e21, a 964 c4 and a pristine Lanica Fulvia there only a hndfull cars without full rollcage modern bucket seats harnesses etc.
I briefly spoke to the team in the Fulvia about their nice Car looking pretty standard/original only giveaway was a rollbar - Pierre and Tommaso - we'll get later back to them.
You could also see that most cars were heavily equipped with all modern kind of tripmeters GPS devices etc. and some carried scars of previous usage.
I chose the Rallye Neige et Glace because there's a group called "Randonneurs" this means we do not do the timing on the regularity stages and try to be on the second at every turn but drive the very same route as the competitors just starting after them. The drive through tests we were supposed to take at the correct minute.
We still had quite some time left - could visit the Peugeot Museum try to have a nap and wait for drivers briefing at 17:00 hrs.
Drivers briefing went well (as well as my french allowed understanding) and a small dinner was served.
During drivers briefing we were reminded that Speed limits have to be obeyed and that the use of studded Tires is highly reommended for the last two Stages of the evening as well as the rest of the event.
My question if I could drive until the last two stages of today on non-Studded and then change tires caused some giggeling among the auditorium...
Apart from one team from the UK with a pristine Ford Escort we were the only non French/Belgium/Swiss team so I thought let's look for the Brits at dinner so we have a little more chance of communication as my french cannot compete with my english.
So we did. And talking to Mark and Sue who knew a lot of the other competitors we quickly realized that this was kind of a classmate meeting of guys doing hardcore regularity rallyes all over Europe.
We were joined by Michel and Yannick from Belgium with the Ascona (400 Clone) - they spoke German French English and the Belgium Accents so it was pretty much babylonic during the Rallye.
Patrick and Jacqueline from Nice with the Golf GTI were also first timers on the Neige et Glace but their Car was rallye prepped like a lot of others.
The first leg was the Night Trip to Malbuisson where we would have our stay until thursday morning.
Starting time for us was received by SMS during the event - we were due for 20:28.
Ok so we took the ramp our starting grid number was 89 and headed off into the night.
I like driving in the night and we also realised that sticking to the given averages sometimes just caused a lack of thrill while being on liaison.
So we took some really nice forest stages mostly still without snow or ice - tried to find our rhythm - we've never driven before together on a rallye.
When we came closer to the end of the leg there were more and more patches of snow so I decided to put the Burzets on the rear axle.
HOLY SHIT - I've driven the studded tires for about 20 kms before the Rallye but I put all 4 of them on the Car. Now having them only on the rear axle made the Car handle VERY interesting.
It was a bit like the famous Spa video with the 2 liter 911 prepped by duel motorsport. You turned in two fingers on the steering waited half a second and had a quarter turn of opposite lock for a slight bend on the road.
Fishtailing like hell. I didn't have that feeling when I tried them at home but I also reduced tire pressure. So we fishtailed the rest of the trip to Malbuisson over muddy and snowy and iced agricultural or forrest ways.
Here is a link to the route traveled

Arriving there we were welcome having a suite with two bedrooms a kitchenette living area and large balcony - this was quite comfy.
We did a little prep for Monday received our Starting time 10:32 had a beer and went to bed.

It's not what it looks on the first glance... It's V-Power 100+ Octane

Recap of Rallye Neige et Glace 2022 Day 2 Monday

We were pretty much at the end of the starting grid so our scheduled start was 10:32
This allowed relaxed mounting of the studded tires to the front, having a couple of coffees, trying to add more route to the roadbook.
    Morning leg: https://scenicapp.space/viewRide.php?rid=DBHbyLRf
We decided pretty fast that we would not even try to drive the regularities at the suggested average and rather go our own pace... ;-) as we were not competing anyway (and wanted to have a little more fun)
Monday was a lot of tarmac without snow or ice - the gopro had a hiccup so not too many pictures or mostly on insta.

This is the map of the afternoon leg https://scenicapp.space/ride/xRvWXwgM

Here on the parking lot at lunch.
