Stuff in boxes - help dating a key chain

Like many of us, I have Porsche stuff in boxes that I have had for a long time. I saw an R Gruppe badge go up for sale the other day (I didn’t purchase it because I have not been invited to join that club) that got me thinking about a grill badge I purchased at the Porsche Parade in Hershey back in 2005. That was a great event. Anyway, I purchased the Hershey 50th anniversary grill badge at that event and it has been in a box with other Porsche stuff somewhere in my house since 2005! I figured it was time to add a grill badge to one of my cars. So digging through boxes I found a lot of stuff I haven’t seen in a while. I may post more photos just to share. Don’t think much of my stuff is ‘longhood’ old since I am a long time owner for my SC and only a few years for my ‘72.

Anyway, hadn’t seen this book in a while but for those that haven’t read it - it is pretty funny. It is signed by the author in 1983.

Questions for the group on the 2 key chains I found. The gold key chain has never been used. I believe they are both from the late 1970’s or very early 1980’s. Figured the experts out there would know?

    Bill,

The black pouch looks like the one I got with my 1970. It should have a chain attached to the inside, with a ring at the end. Two sections of spring steel in the hem at the top keep it closed. Let me know if you are interested in selling.

Thanks much, Bruce. Not looking to sell - just sharing with the group. I know these leather pouch key chains were around for a while and there were variations over the years. I was thinking mine was not quite as old.

Anyway, I did finally find the grill badge I was looking for. Now I need to mount it. Sounds like folks use felt on the back.

Found a drink coaster that I forgot I purchased at the parade that year. Need to put this to use as well!

Bill: I wish I could remember where I saw it [drat - I can't] but there was a detailed write up on the particular characteristics of these pouches and data about determining vintage, etc. [could have been right here on Early S?]. Might be worth searing this site a bit more.

R Gruppe grille badge: Sad that these are market items. I've always believed that those who try to make money out of the club [Cris excepted] should be given the boot. "Invited" and membership has generally been such an happenstance that I'm certain I wouldn't have been a member if I hadn't happened to be a close friend before there was a Gruppe. Really, there should never have been any outside world identifiers to attract egos or status. The original intention was "NO egos". Yea. Fat chance.

thanks, John. i searched the site and it appears my leather key chain/pouch is likely late 70's or early 80's as i suspected - as it does not have a liner in it. i read the early versions had liners (maroon) and the liner material varied by vintage, but mine is just the raw backside of the leather. i believe the gold metal keychain is from the same time period.

Hi Bill, that pouch looks identical (at least from the outside) to my key chain (72T). I’m the second owner so reasonably sure it came with the car. My two cents. Cheers.

Yep - this is what I am seeing -- that the outside matches the early version but it sounds like the liners are different across the years. Mine has no liner. But I am no expert
