    CDI box testing

Hello all, What is the best way to test an early 3 pin CDI box not installed in the car? Thanks in advance.

Sadly, the easiest way to test it is probably to install it in the car.

if you get one like that
    https://www.ebay.com/itm/294005266943?
and a transistor like that https://www.infineon.com/dgdl/Infine...5aa335436b0fae you can build a bench test rig.
I know there are also some that don't need the transistor/have it included, but I didn't find it in my quick search.

I would contact Bob Ashlock here on the board and talk to him, not sure what testing would cost but he is one of the best out there to recondition one when needed. My assumption is you are wanting a known good spare. they are small and easy to ship, he is in Orange County.

    Regards

If you have a 12V supply (like a car battery) and a coil, you can connect a coil and a spark plug to the coil with a wire running from the body of the spark plug to the negative terminal. The CDI sparks on opening the contact between the wire from the distributor and the ground. A first test would be to hear it whine when it is connected to 12V. From memory, the left terminal is for the breaker points, the middle one for +12V, and the right one goes to the + of the coil. The ground goes to the CDI chassis.
    Good luck,
    Dario
