Thread: Intermittent Exhaust Fumes in Cabin - '66 SWB

    I was chasing my tail on a similar smell. Turned out when I set my coffee between the seats and the defroster levers where used as side support and left extended up. Eventually the cabin stunk up due to a leak at the ducts up front. This was a head scratchers as I didn’t realize I had pulled on the levers.

    Do you have all the proper rubber seals on the center license panel?

    There is a rubber seal that slips in at the top of the center license panel area . that stops hot exhaust fumes from going into the engine area. makes no difference what kind of bumper you have. Chris

    I haven’t installed all the rubber trim. Point well taken. Totally understand the exhaust vortices. Back channeling through the cabin air. I am going to plug the 2 ports as I’m deleting the muffed air. Such a nasty idea to have 50 year old tin go around a muffler and come inside ��*♂️.

    I think the panel seal is a red herring. Also, the heater tin does not go around the muffler or any gasket joints, only around solid exhaust pipe. Based on the photo you posted, you have oil leaking onto your exhaust right at the seam of the heat exchanger. Some of this oil gets in the exchanger and creates cabin smoke. Fix your oil leaks!

    Sorry, my bad, 50 year old tubing and 50 year old tin, the point is these items don’t get periodic inspections to check for exhaust/oil leaks.

    Heat exchangers are used on single engine airplanes, they have a periodic calendar inspection to check for leaks accompanied by a carbon monoxide detector in the cockpit. (Changes color when detecting carbon)

    The oil and fuel smell it’s part of the experience, I get it, but not necessary. I don’t mind it as much, but the girlfriends/wife’s friends etc hate it.

    Sorry, this thread took a turn.

    I will Fix my oil leaks as well, plug all the holes and replace my seals. : - )
