All Buttoned Up for Winter and On to My Winter Project …

Sadly, today I finally put “Chester”, our 1968 911L into winter storage. Putting the car away is always a sad day, but I’m thrilled we got decent weather to be able to drive all the way unto December, which is a rarity here in Chicago. I pulled the battery and popped it on a CTEK charger to keep to fresh all winter. And my winter project will be getting my seats re-stuffed so I pulled them and am dropping them off next week to knock that out.

Anyway, pulling Chester back out of storage is at last something to look forward in the Spring - or at least whenever all the snow melts 🙂

    Yup, here’s my checklist:

    1. I filled up the tank with 93-octane gas and added StaBil
    2. I overinflated the tires
    3. I pulled the battery and put it on a CTEK charger
    4. I put Bounce dryer sheets in the tailpipe
    5. I did a fresh wash and full interior clean before covering up

That’s pretty much it, similar to what I did with my 2010 911 4S Cab last month when I stored it in our heated garage up at our lake home. Now the countdown starts to Spring to pull these bad boys out again to get them back on the road

I do just about all you’ve mentioned here in KC but why do you remove the battery?

Great question, but the simple answer is that it’s just a function of logistics…. I don’t have room in my garage at home to store both of my 911’s along with our winter daily drivers (2019 Cayenne Turbo for me, 2018 Audi Q7 for the wife). So while I store the 997.2 up at our lake home in our heated garage with a CTEK charger plugged into the wall, I store the ‘68 in a private garage that unfortunately doesn’t have access to plug in a charger. So I have to pull the battery and leave it on a CTEK charger at home over the winter. Wish it weren’t so, but I throw that into the general bucket of “first world problems” that I’m OK with

I set my '69T up for winter storage two weeks ago, but given the warm weather here in Denver, still with zero snow for 2021, I'm happily still driving it, burning off the tank of clean gas and Stabil. Maybe we'll get snow late this week, at which point I'll get it washed again, fill it up with another fresh tank of gas, another bottle of Stabil, hook it up to a trickle-charger, park it in the garage, and switch over to the Jeep Recon sitting in the background. I wash, wax and cover my cars along with overinflating of the tires. No Sta-Bil, but have easy access to Ethanol free 93 octane gas.
I also change the oil and filter prior to storage. It's hard to believe no one else has mentioned this. I can't be the only one......?

Dang, great catch Jay, I totally forgot to mention that, but that ALWAYS gets before going away for the season. The other thing I always do is make sure to run the car long and hard enough on the last drive before putting it away for storage. I always make sure to get up to temp with some "spirited" driving before covering up for the winter, which also tides me over until Spring Great catch on mentioning the oil and filter change!

Next step, restufflng the seats …

Having fully prepped Chester for a long winter’s rest, I pulled the seats out today to send them out to be re-stuffed. While the original upholstery and hardware are in great shape, the seats are pretty squished down, particularly on the driver’s side, so I’m dropping them off tomorrow to get fixed up this winter. I’m already looking forward to getting back on the road in the Spring to put more miles on Chester, so this may be a long winter ….

Looking for Seat Cushion Recommendations …

    Gents,

Having gotten a late start on this winter project, I’m hoping to dip into the collective wisdom here to get your suggestions for the best options for seat cushions. It turns out that the seat springs are pretty much toast on both seats so I plan to buy new OEM seat springs for both seats, but I’m looking for your best suggestions for cushions. All of the hardware and seat covers are in great shape so all I need is some guidance on best options for the seat cushions.

What do you guys suggest? Who makes the best replacement cushions and what do you think my options are? Thanks as always for your help for this final step to be ready to drive the wheels off Chester once the snow melts here in Chicago!
