VIN from a secret number ?

    Greetings,

is it possible to get/know a VIN from a secret/under the dash number ?
Got the case with a chassis with a clear(ed) VIN in the front trunk but has a secret number stamped.
    Cheers

I beleive it is possible, depending on the year, early cars the dash stamp matched the vin and in later years
it was a production number. DaveP would be a good member to contact.

porsche does not give this info away.
    unless....
somebody forges a vin and forgets to alter/remove the production#.later sells this car to someone who then finds out something is fishy .if this someone goes to court and if his lawyer pulls the right levers porsche will tell you the vin to the production#

As mentioned, Porsche will not give you a production (dash) or chassis number if you only have one of the numbers. However, about 5 years ago I gave both numbers on a car and they verified that they were a match to their records. The COA process has since changed and become more restrictive on information and costly so I'm not sure now, but it is a reasonable argument that confirming or denying such a match helps suppress fraud, which is the primary reason they are currently so restrictive on numbers.

Not trying to fraud here, got an opportunity to buy a complete 2.2 1971, and am enquiring to see if it is a scam/fraud or not.
Title has a VIN, and chassis not. So if I could get the secret number matching a VIN, I could check if the VIN on the title matches the secret hence could stand the correct VIN again. If not, then I will not buy it.
    Thanks for the inputs.

Xavier, it is anyway possible to check whether the secret number corresponds with the car type, if not to the exact vin ...

A 71 has the chassis or VIN number in four places. If all of them are gone, then they are gone for a reason. Beware!

get the COA and see if the colour on the vehicle(if there is any original left) matches the one stated on the document....
or if there is any extra equipment mentioned ...sunroof,etc can also give it away

In Fr, you can get the COA only if you own the car...and the current owner is not willing to...
I'd like to save it but not all cost of course.
