Race or rally options in 1965

    Hi all!

Which would have been the original rally or racing options, that would have been stated on Kardex for a June -65 delivered car?

    Thanks,
    Timo

Interesting question and would love to know more about the car in question. Rally and Sport Kits for Solex-engined cars were itemised in the "For the Competition Driver" brochure at the start of 1967. It may be that components from the kits were available before then?

There was a Sport Kit I for Solex carbs advertised a little while back.

It appeared on the parts manual dated June 1966 according to the seller.

Lovely parts. Does anyone produce a good repro pair of rain hats for the carbs?

A popular competition option was the limited slip differential, option number 9574. This was available in 1965.

There were a number of other competition parts available in 1967 either as part of the rally kits for the 911 and 911S or separately as options. These might provide some idea of competition options for earlier model years. Brett Johnson’s authenticity guide lists optional equipment for all model years.

Here is a list of the components of the 9551 and 9552 rally kits from the March 1967 document “For the Competition Driver”.

The rally kit for the 911 normal included parts that were standard on the 911S, those being the larger sway bars, Dunlop tires and Koni shocks. The adjustable Koni shocks were available starting in October 1965 and the Dunlop SP tires were listed as a standard option in 1966. It doesn’t look like larger sway bars were an option for 1965 or 1966.

The drivers side foot rest is part of both rally kits for model year 1967. It would be interesting to see when it first shows up on a parts list and if it was available in 1965 or 1966.

The comment “Instead of Recaro bucket seats, the old unsprung competition bucket seat may be ordered” makes it seem that this was a competition option available earlier.

So if you are looking for specific competition options on a June 1965 car, the list could include a limited slip differential and possibly some of the components listed above, if it turns out they were available in some fashion earlier than what is documented.
