1971 911T carbureted where is the location of the fuel filter?

I suspect I might have a clogged fuel filter. It is a 1971 911T with Zenith carbs. All the pictures and posts show a metal filter in the left engine bay but I don't see one. I believe the carb versions had an inline clear filter. For the life of me I can' find it. Any help would be much appreciated.

    Thanks,

    Jeremy

The only filter was in the fuel tank, which is often overlooked and can clog up. It is a cleanable brass gauze filter.

Also there are filter screens located in the banjo fittings at the carbs. However, as Ed mentioned, the fuel filter in the tank is most susceptible to clogging from rust inside the tank.

Thanks you very much. How do you get to the brass gauze filter? Is it attached to the 22mm hex drain at the rear of the undersurface of the gas tank? Also,
what is the best way to drain a completely full gas tank. I was thinking of draining from the fill hole initially and getting the rest out via the fuel level sensor plug on top the the gas tank so I can inspect the tank. If there isn't any signs of rust in the tank, is draining enough or should I consider putting in an inline filter? I appreciat any suggestions.

    Thanks,

    Jeremy

I use an electric fuel pump that I jumper wire to car's battery and pump out the fuel from the removed level sender into cans. Then with the front of the car up and the rack protection pan removed I remove the filter sock. It will be a 27mm hex. With the fuel sock out hold it up to a strong light, if you can't see the tube inside thru the gauze it is clogged. Carb cleaner, brushes, compressed air will get it clean.

Thanks Ed. Is this what is looks like? Also, how can I tell if my tank needs to be taken out and cleaned versus just drained? I really appreciate your help. Jeremy

Yep,,,that's it. If there is a lot of loose junk floating around in your tank then it may be good time to remove it and pressure wash the inside. If you just see rusty surface metal, but not a lot of particles floating around then you're probably safe not to remove and clean.
