Not trying to salt the wound but I just registered my 72 in Oregon with a SP (special vintage) plate which is a one time fee for life and no smog ever for $102.00 dollars and it's a cool looking plate. They will also let you use a original 72 plate so I might get one.

If you want to make a 1973 911 Carrera RS legal for use in California after direct importation from another country, you get to experience the wonder and joy of the CARB's nonsensical and idiotic stranglehold on legalization. You also get to realize that California doesn't want your RS here and has made it as hard as possible to find the information necessary to make it legal without jumping through hoops.

I've talked with these guys in the past and they were actually fairly helpful: https://gnkauto.com/epa-carb-emissions/ The owner of the car ended up being unwilling to pay their legalization and modification fees (which were, if I remember correctly, around $20k estimated in 2017) and pursued other methods of making the car road legal.

If you want to talk to the CARB themselves, you can call them at 1-800-242-4450 or email them at helpline@www.arb.ca.gov.

No one I've known has actually gone through the process. I don't want to be the first but there's a Peugeot 205 Rallye calling to me...

    I'd start by reading the CA DMV web-site --- jus' sayin' . . .

Your vehicle does not need a smog inspection if your:

Gasoline-powered vehicle is a 1975 year model or older (This includes motorcycles and trailers.)
