    Installing German sound dampening pad

    Hi Everyone:

    I am undergoing a bare metal restoration on my 71T and need some help with the installation of the sound dampening pads on the floor boards. I was able to source German sound dampening pads with the hex pattern (see picture below) but there is no adhesive on the underside. I believe the best solution will be a product which can be sprayed on so that there is even coverage and it does not create high and low spots. What product should I use?

    i do not know about 1971 or the material that you are showing.
    in 1968 Porsche used a 3mm thick tar matt with smooth felt on top.
    It was melted onto the body with a heat gun or torch...
    your product needs to be examined to determine if it should be apiyed that way

    Hi Bob,

    The material in the photo is a thick tar-like mat about 3mm thick. It does not have any felt on it but from all the original 1971 floor boards I have seen there was no felt on the sound dampening pads.

    good.... actually, the surface with the squares is the "felt" side.... Now if you have what i think you have it will melt with a very hot heat gun or propane torch. this will stick it to the floor.
    The tar cools very fast. so heat it in small areas and then press it into place. it will conform to the "ribs" in the floor.
    were did you source the material and how long and wide is it..

    It’s actually a BMW part and I figured German OEM is close enough to the original material. Each panel measures 1160mm x 700mm. You need three panels to cover the entire driver and passenger floor board areas.

    just my opinion. i think it would look very good in your 1971.

    I would use 3m general purpose trim adhesive. Pretty good stuff and used it numerous times for different interior work. Just be sure to follow the instructions and spray both sides until tacky.

    Hi Ravi, would you please provide the BMW part number.
    Regarding installation, you might look into primers that are used for bitumen based waterproofing membranes for buildings (spray on and brush on primers are available), to coat floor pan before installing sound deadener pads. Just a thought.
