Thread: Original Finish on Spring Arm Hardware?

Original Finish on Spring Arm Hardware?

Can someone please tell me the original finish on the eccentric bolts and nuts for the spring arm on my '67? It looks like they may have originally been a black oxide color, but I also see a zinc oxide color on the back of the nuts that rubbed against the washer.

    Thank you!

I can't explain why yours are zinc plated, but everything I've ever seen was a black, probably black oxide. Wait and see if anyone else has jumps in with original zinc plated hardware.

It’s actually black phosphate. Black oxide is similar but not as effective as a rust retardant .

    Exactly no black oxide

Thank you so much for the help. Black phosphate makes perfect sense.

Upon closer examination, the adjusting bolts are definitely black phosphate or similar.

It's harder to tell on the bolts and nuts that connect the end of the sprint plate to the trailing arm. These bolts look also to be black but one of the washers definitely has yellow zinc where it was protected by being pressed against the spring arm.

What about the bolts for the rear bushing cover? Are they supposed to be black or yellow?

    Thank you so much.

    Oregon67,

Are you talking about the four bolts that attach the spring plate cover at the torsion bar?

What about the bolts for the rear bushing cover?

Those are yellow zinc in my experience.

    Best regards,

Yes, Brad. Those are the bolts I'm wondering about: the four that attache the cover for the torsion bar. Mine are so corroded I can't tell. It sounds like edmayo is saying they are black like the rest of the spring plate bolts.

I may have to rescind that, I found a picture of an original car showing yellow bolts. But it was a 70, need to find picture of a 67.
