    Shifting issue (I think)...

Our 73 is new-ish to me... Been driving it off/on for over a year. Has a 3.2 in it, with the original 915/02 transmission (from what I was told).

Recently shifting has felt off... Or I have completely forgotten how to drive a stick. I'm now wondering if I might have a shifting linkage issue and/or something else going on?

It started with second gear giving me resistance as I am trying to drop it into second. The feel is like there is something preventing me from going all the way into second. It does not feel like it is in the transmission. No grind, and if I cycle back in/out of another gear, then back into second, still has the same resistance. So my novice transition mechanic brain has me thinking it feels like an obstruction in the linkage (not sure how to explain it other than that.) Was not like this before, this has only recently started. Then just yesterday, as I am going though the gears, it feel like everything has moved around. I can only explain it like the top row, 1,3 & 5 have all moved way over to one side, or the bottom row 2, 4 & R have all moved over to the other side. I can't figure it out. I go to move from one gear to the next and the wrong gear is where the gear I'm looking for has been? Am I losing my mind? I've never had this issue not once. Do these descriptions sound like something other than me forgetting how to freaking drive? Either way, this is driving me nuts trying to figure out what has changed if anything. Synchros? Linkage? Bushings? Go back to driving school? Where might I start my research...

Thanks in advance for any input.

It very much sounds to me like the shift rod coupling has slipped.

There are various instructions on how to adjust it. My suggestion is to put some White Out on the part with the splines and the part that goes over the splines. Then put a bunch of different color lines on one side, and a black mark on the other. Then move it one spline at a time, try it out, even drive it, and keep going until you go past the best spot, and back again. The lines on the White Out are to help you remember where the best spot is, when you leave it and need to come back.

I found that even one spline over can make the difference.

And when it is right, it's right. The H is solidly formed. 1 is directly above 2, 3 above 4, etc., with straight throws (or 2 is above 3 and 4 is above 5). And the neutral path is perpendicular and distinct.

Are the bushings something I could swap? My mechanic looks to be 8 weeks out...

Do a search and make a determination for yourself. This topic has been discussed until it is well and truly dead.
