    "Public Help" Handles

For some reason I have become obsessed with the handles attached to some rally cars on each side of the rear window to provide a firm grip to assist in righting a car after an overturn. Were these handles part of a rally kit option, or did they have a discrete option code of their own, or were they individually applied to specific cars at the discretion of the team/driver? I've tried to research this point and have only found pictures, but no further information as to how they were supplied.

I have only ever seen them on the factory prepared Safari cars which had extensive modifications including double skinning a number of panels, the bespoke crash bars as well as a lot of other modifications specifically for that event. So I would say they are bespoke and unlikely to have a part number

those look like the handles that shool busses had installed on the recliner..back in the days... mercedes and kässbohrer/setra used them and if i remember correctly GHE was written on them..GHE / Happich was a supplier for porsche as well(ashtray, cloac peg etc)

on this one they have been removed

Those look very much like the handles inside my '72 BMW CS Coupé, above the rear quarter windows...

Here's another from my photo collection showing the handles. Notice the similarities to the green car shown earlier including consecutive license plate numbers which probably indicate they were prepped at the same time. Like Hugh, I've only seen the handles on the "Safari" cars although they might have been useful on some of the winter rally cars as well.

yes they only seemed to be on the actual cars used in competition - not the practice cars (which might have been useful here)

I think that is very likely that, given their limited use, they were especially sourced from a company that made them for another purpose - like a grab handle or similar - and they never were an official Porsche part
