    Oil Thermostat Compatibility

I’m having a hard time figuring out whether a ‘72 and later oil thermostat will work correctly in a ‘71 magnesium case. I’ve read they are compatible without modification to the case and I’ve also seen we’re the magnesium case must be clearanced to accept the later thermostat.

I’ve installed a later thermostat in my ‘71E case and it appears to fit but I’m not absolutely sure. There is a small gap around the edge of the unit but this appears to be caused by the mounting flanges of the thermostat and not because it’s not seating deep enough.

Does anyone know for sure or am I better off just buying an earlier thermostat?

My memory was that the problem was aluminum cases, not mag.

    Ed,

This makes sense to me. The thermostat was in a box of parts that contained the engine pieces. It would make sense it was removed from the engine based on this. Also, it looks like it’s fully seated based on the picture I posted.

    Anyone else have any insight?
