sourcing cars by vin in the US national DMW database?

    Hello everybody

Is there is a way to search for DMW registry information by the vin.

I have a vin number from a family members old Porsche and would love to track it, is that even possible ?

Does anyone know if a vin registry exist and how do one access it?

Any help is appreciated and I will gladly pay for assistance, so help will be highly rewarded.

    thanks much

The USA has no national VIN registry in the sense you are thinking about it. However, folks on this site can get you the vehicle's Kardex if it is within certain years.

No, you cannot do that in the USA. Most states have laws that specifically prohibit the DMV from providing any information other than has the VIN been reported stolen or not.

yes there is. If an older car is actually registered you can find it here: https://mvscusa.com/reports-2/nmvtis/

THANK You very much this was exactly what I was looking for that must also mean that there is a nationwide database, when this search engine is available it must collect data from somewhere

I think not; private citizens cannot access personal data on cars other than their own. But it would be great if the OP tries and reports back here. It is the same in the OP’s home country of Denmark, where I happen to own a car.

    No, not really.

NMVTIS is the database that companies like CarFax uses to generate reports. I believe the database is only good for VINs generated under the standardized system.

I spent five bucks to generate a report on my VIN. It does show that there is no salvage report associated with my car (correct) and what state it was last registered in (and the date) plus the mileage reported at the time. You can request a full record on the vehicle if you are the owner. So you might be able to figure out what state a car is in currently but that’s about it with this method (mvscusa.com).

Just tried this for an 81 924 turbo and said VIN does not exist ?
Is it the WPO part of Porsches Vin that causes an issue ?
    Thanks
