Thread: Oil Leak Between Cam Chain Housing and Head?

Question Oil Leak Between Cam Chain Housing and Head?

    Hello Boys and Girls,

My 1970 911T with a stock 2.2 is leaking oil, not bad but it drips on to the heat exchangers and it stinks. I am putting on new valve cover gaskets but as I look more it appears it maybe leaking from another area between Cam Chain Housing and Head. Here are some pictures...does this look familiar to anyone? If its the seals, then I may need to pull the engine and replace a bunch of old seals, gaskets, etc. Thoughts appreciated on this one...

    When did it start leaking?

After a rebuild or over time?

Over time, no recent rebuild. I just installed the Rennline lower valve covers with new Victor Reinz valve cover gaskets and it helps, but there is still a bit of oil leaking onto the heat exchangers (not as much since I could see two sources of oil leaks). I will put in oil dye tomorrow and use a black light to see where its coming from. My suspicion is the cam chain housing area but we will see.

Some rocker arm shafts are probably leaking , much more common than a leak between the heads and the camshaft housing .

Well, after installing the Rennline valve covers with victor reinz gaskets I would say that the oil leak is 90% solved. Here are some pictures, normally both sides would leak oil and leave a larger oil stain if left overnight. I will pursue the rocker arm shaft idea later...thanks gents! Bottom picture is upside down and I can't flip it for some reason...
