How Many 64/65 911s Were Painted Silver Metallic (6206)?

Does anyone know how many “true” 64/65 911s were painted silver metallic (6206)? By “true” I am excluding from that number the 911s that were built after the factory closed for retooling at the end of July and reopened a month+/- later and started manufacturing the next MY cars, i.e., the 1966s.

My 66 was 6206 was it was special order. Outside of your search but might be a good data point later on.

as there are no statistics known to me to be available to answer your special question I may bring up the classic citation:

The October 1967 edition of Christophorus published a percentage breakdown of Porsche colors delivered in 1966:

    Light Ivory: 23.9%
    Polo Red: 18.7%
    Irish Green: 14.2%
    Sand Beige: 9.5%
    Aga (Dark) Blue: 8.7%
    Slate Grey: 6.9%
    Bahama Yellow: 6.5%
    Gulf (Light] Blue: 4.6%
    Metallic Silver: 3.1%
    Black: 3.0%
    All Other Colors: 0.9%

You can calculate this down on the MY 64/65 to get a good estimation…
    59 750 pre unit triton
63 650 gray silver bikinitub triumph thunderbird
70 650 astralred silver triumph bonneville
    65 912 slate gray "erwin"
    73 914 ravennagreen "ferdl"

Thanks, can you provide a badge photo? Notice how they are clustered? 300190 is a sure bet, and I think there are many more. They might possibly paint ten at one time in such a color to minimize the cleanup required between color changes.

So, assuming that Porsche manufactured 2104 1965 MY cars (see https://www.early911sregistry.org/fo...5-s-were-built), and that the 65 MY production percentage of metallic silver cars is about the same as the percentage of silver colors delivered in 1966 (3.1%), then the number of silver MY 65s is about 65+/-.

That is a reasonable way to make the estimate, however I would have used 2000 as the production figure for 1965 model year cars (defined as 64xx paint code, straight knee pad, and small ignition bezel; all for LHD cars, the RHD cars have a special case). I have data showing a few 66xx paint codes prior to 302000 and several 64xx paint codes after 302000. Special colors in the 641x series were carried over into the 1966 model year along with 6206. The earliest 66xx code I know of was in the low 3017xx series, but I have a feeling this was an early introduction of a 1966 MY color for a special client, and the car itself was probably still a 1965 model year car otherwise. During the 1965 MY to 1966 MY transition it is very difficult to make a definitive statement. Not until the 1968 model year did Porsche encode the model year in the VIN and thus remove the doubt for most cars. That did not stop them from taking a previous year car and rebuilding it into a later year car and changing the VIN though; this was a practice used mostly on race cars.
