    FS: @Bonhams - Rare very early 911 soft-window Targa

Coming up for auction with Bonhams at this year's Goodwood Revival is this stunningly restored 1967 Porsche 911 ‘soft-window’ Targa, one of the earliest examples known to survive.

This delightful example of a much sought after Porsche is currently UK registered with an up to date V5C registration document and bears the chassis number 500017, with the engine number 911124 (Type 901/06). The factory Kardex (build record) shows it was completed on 31st January 1967, finished in Polo Red (6602) with a black leatherette interior.

The first Targa sold to the general public was chassis number 500021, suggesting this car (500017) is one of the few very early – possibly promotional – examples to be sold ahead of general production. The engine number also predates the range of units fitted to production models.

It was first registered to Fleischhauer, Koln (one of the earliest and most respected Porsche dealerships, located in Cologne) before eventually finding its way to the UK, where it was registered as XEF 88Y on 17th September 1982. In November 1990 it was issued with the current age-related number (SVN 99D). The first UK keeper is unknown, but it was sold to a Barbara Hutt of Middlesbrough in 1983 and then to a John Bennett in Prudhoe in 1989. Mr Bennett kept the car for only a short time, selling it to Darren Weighhell of Northallerton a year later. From that point on it remained in the same family (with a further two different registered owners) until eventually falling into disrepair.

It was acquired by the current owners in January 2017 in a partly dismantled condition, in need of a full restoration. Since then, the rare SWB (short wheelbase) 911 Targa has been the subject of a four-year restoration by marque specialists Williams-Crawford of Saltash in Cornwall. The restoration was full documented, noting that as many of the original components as possible were repaired and reused rather than simply being replaced. Body panels bearing the stamping '017' were retained where possible. The original engine was rebuilt to a high standard and reinstalled.

When acquired, the Targa had been equipped with original, and now very rare, 4.5Jx15 Fuchs wheels, as fitted to the contemporary Porsche 911S. Although these wheels do not appear on the Kardex, it is possible they were specified by the original owner at the point of purchase.

This represents a great opportunity for a Porsche enthusiast or collector to acquire one of the best examples of a rare model dating back to the earlier days of Porsche 911 history. With its accurate and fastidious restoration, the Targa would make a great addition to any garage or collection.
The estimate is £140,000 to £180,000.

The Goodwood Revival auction hosted by Bonhams takes place on 17th September – coincidentally, the 40th anniversary of the Targa's first UK registration! More details of the auction can be found by contacting Guy Newton on +44 (0)20 7468 8243 or by visiting www.bonhams.com

    Auction Description:

    • One of the earliest examples known to survive. Chassis 017.
    • Offered fresh from a fastidious professional world class specialist restoration
    • Rare and desirable Soft Window example
    • Delivered new to Germany
    • UK registered in 1982

Built in 1966 on the original short wheelbase, the car offered here is one of the very first 911 Targa models to leave the factory; indeed, '017' may pre-date the first Targa delivered to the public, which sources list as chassis '500021'. '017' was delivered to the Fleischhauer dealership in Cologne sometime prior to its registration on 31st January 1967. This very early 911 retains its matching-numbers engine although the reference books list it as 'earlier' than those records suggest. The factory Kardex (the written record retained by Porsche showing the build date and specification of each new vehicle, a copy of which accompanies the car) shows that the engine number '911124' is a 911 (Type 901/01), part of range '909001' to '912050', although Targa engines were listed as starting from '911191'.

'017' appears to have remained in Germany until imported into the UK in 1982. Registered 'XEF 88Y' on 17th September 1982. In November 1990 it was issued with the current age-related number (SVN 99D). The first UK owner's identity is not known, but on 26th April 1983 the car was registered to a Mrs Barbara Hutt of Middlesborough. Mrs Hutt was followed by John Bennett of Prudhoe, from 10th March 1989, passing into the ownership of the Weighell family, three members of which would own the car, on 6th June 1990.

Registered to Mr Alfie Weighell of Darlington on 20th March 2003, '017' was acquired by the current owners in January 2017 requiring complete restoration. Since then, the car has been the subject of an exacting four-year restoration carried out by world respected marque specialists Williams Crawford of Saltash, Cornwall. Documented photographically, the rebuild involved over 900 man-hours of painstaking attention to detail and research. During that time, the number '017' was discovered stamped into the door, body and engine lid, confirming these were original panels. It should be noted that the car is fitted with genuine 4.5Jx15 Fuchs wheels as used on the contemporary 911S of 1967. Although these wheels do not appear on the Kardex, they are believed to have been fitted in period by the first owner, and have been retained as they form part of the car's history. The original 'Kardex' build sheet is with the car, which also comes with an extensive and most comprehensive history file (inspection recommended).

Now presented in its original Polo Red, the Targa is finished to a standard far beyond what was achievable in 1966. With only a relative handful of miles covered since its restoration, this piece of Porsche history is ready to join the finest of world class Porsche collections.

Not an S so has the aluminum dash piece and no seat surrounds. Knowledgable people please correct me if i am wrong. Therefore would have come with steel wheels. If Fuchs ordered from factory would have been on Kardex. Obviuosly later addition or maybe at dealer but not at factory. Maybe what they meant by "point of purchase". Nice addition though. Already told these guys there were earlier sales of production cars but they don't seem to want to acknowledge if I am reading their intro correctly.

I hope the seller finds the right buyer. This 1966 Porsche appears to be done to the highest level of excellence. The SWT 's are the essence of the Porsche word "Targa". Best of luck !!!

Unfortunately, if I bought the car I would no longer be able to afford a garage!
