Thread: 73 recaro sport seats paint vs. powder coat

Question 73 recaro sport seats paint vs. powder coat

I am having my 73 Recaro Sport Seats recovered by Tony at Autobahn but I am doing the Hardware myself. Are the Reclining Hinges, Bottoms of Head Rests, and seat frame painted or powder coated black? The slide rails are a mix of what looks like paint and chrome. This may be from an earlier renovation.

I am only a year into my 1st Air-cooled Porsche ownership and this is my first big project so any info is appreciated.

Welcome! Hoping to see your car pics here on the forum. You should get some good responses to your query.

The seat frame itself wasn't painted at all.
The rest was painted but with a visible structure.

Yes, as I thought: these are d-shape headrests. these were used from 1968 - 1971. so if you don't cover your 73 seats with real leather, then they wouldn't be the period correct ones. then you need peanut headrests - then there's nothing to paint.
your brackets are from the 2nd series of the big brackets, also from the period 1970-1971. you would need "double locker" for 1973 original. of course your headrests and brackets will also work in the 73 car - should only be an indication of originality.
only paint the hinge and d-shape lower part with the mentioned structure paint. the rest is normal smooth paint - rails no paint. I would also protect the seat frame right away (paint or powder doesn't matter).

    regards

I wanted to update a couple of items. While I had Autobahn do my Seats I did get Darian from Autos International give me a quote and he powdercoats as part of his restoration. I did some paint samples and Satin Black Rustoleum is a perfect match if you are looking to do the restoration yourself on a budget. $695 to powdercoat vs $10 and some of your time.
