    Classics at the Castle

A few photos of the event at Headingham castle to start the ball rolling

I’m sure others who attended have more and better snaps for the benefit of those who couldn’t make it.

A few of the Carrera RS examples assembled for imminent 50th anniversary — photo taken atop and showing the Keep of the Norman castle that dates back to soon after the 1066 conquest having been in continuous family ownership of its current owners for nearly a millennium, I believe:

I was fortunate to be invited have lunch by the charming owners of the house and castle

and luckily ended up seated next to Gijs Van Lennep so over a few glasses of wine we discussed many things the Targa Florio win of course….

… but also when he heard my work background included running F1 team technical debriefs for two seasons we got more deeply into his time in F1 around 1973/4 when he drove for Frank Williams. Comparing how in his era things worked between driver and design / race engineering c.f. how it is done today in F1 with the ability to build digital models and use simulation at all stages of the lifecycle. He had a good recollection of the detail of his F1 races even down to recalling the discussions he’d had regarding set up of the rear for the car, the tyre strategy deployed and optimising the “hours” on the available engines, — impressive to remember this some five decades later.

What make this event special is chance to catch up with likeminded KG era folks over the day surrounded by special cars in such a lovely historic setting. Not spoiled by being made commercial or over artsy like some other events.

Thank you to the hosts Demetra and Jason Lindsay and the hardworking team who put this event together for us to enjoy
