    Car / owner / value of 901 transmission (serial # 100812)

Hello, this is my first post on 911S Registry.

    Context:

In 2021 I purchased a 1966 912 (story on 912BBS). The car came with a 901/0 transmission, it's been in storage since 1986 in Pleasanton CA, and was converted to a 911 at some point during its life - hence the transmission. The PO bought the car in 1985, stored it in 1986, changed the engine in 2003, and then back in storage it went. Currently the car is being restored at my mechanic near Santa Rosa, CA. The 901/0 transmission is at his shop. In order to better match the 90hp engine I am hoping to go back to a 912 transmission (902/1) and considering selling the 901/0 transmission.

    Condition of the transmission:
    • Has been in car since at least 1986, not been driven since
    • I drove the car for ~3mi on the 901/0 transmission and had no issues shifting (this was done prior to getting the car restored)
    • There might be a leak at the rubber seal in the front which the mechanic said is an easy fix
    • Case needs a cleaning

    Questions given the above:
    • How do I go about finding the car VIN that would match this transmission?
    • How would I go about finding the owner of the car with the matching VIN?
    • Finally, what would be an estimated value of the transmission?

Appreciate any thoughts / suggestions folks have. If anyone is interested in the transmission please let me know as well. I can make a separate post on Classifieds once I understand what to list it for, thanks!

I can help with part 1, and I can help a little with part 2. To find the VIN in which it was originally installed we would need to do a reverse search in the Kardex database. This is a manual investigation of about 200 Kardex images, so the cost is significant. You do get the Kardex for the car. Then I can look in my database to see if that car it listed as known to me; I have perhaps 20% of the cars in the range listed. There is a good chance we could contact the owner this way if the car is listed.

    Thanks!

Any ballpark range on the value of the transmission? That might determine if the effort is worth it or not.
