    2.4 TV to 2.7 RS - "Leo Kinnunen tribute"

    Hi,

    I am a big fan of Leo Kinnunen and already almost a year ago decided to build a replica of his RSL (ST) LINK HERE . AND HERE

    The car being built is original 911 2.4 TV (vergaser). Its same year and same colour as the "role model" and it will be build to match the RSL spec with modifications that were made to Leos car. I will update this topic as the project goes forward and will be asking some support once in a while. Hardest part is to define what were done at the factory and what might have been later additions - but this keep the whole process interesting.

    I will have few engine options for this car - matching 2.4 that will be modified to match the RS -spec and another already completely rebuilt S -spec MFI motor.

    Body modifications:

    -Full Bare metal restoration to make sure all rust is gone
    -No underbody coating as in lightweight bodies should be,
    -911 ST fenders
    -Custom made glass fiber bumpers
    -73RS center tunnel reinforcement addition
    -Belt connection points to the parcel self
    -ST roll bar supports
    -Adding oil cooler lines and radiator

    Interior:

    -Lightweight carpets and rubber mats
    -No sound insulation
    -Period correct roll bar (no FIA requirements)
    -250km/h or 300km/h speedo
    -Lightweight door cards
    -Original Recaro sport seats and also Recaro 1320 seats
    -Clock removal
    -No radio nor speaker
    -Various steering wheel options

    Suspension:

    -73RS rear trailing arm reinforcements

    MFI : You need an RS space cam for the pump , right now Bosch is not making any , so hard to find . If you can find one , buy it ! The stacks and throttle bodies need to be machined to RS or '72 , '73S specs , easy with the right tooling , find the right person .

    I ordered a 2.2S space cam and a friend a 2.8 RSR cam.

    They are not cheap, however that is relative for parts NLA.....

    Cool project, unfortunatly your car don't have the real RS arches, not correct steering wheel (yours is standard 911) and not correct MFi stacks/pump model (Mag stacks vs plastic).
    You can try Classic auto clock in Poland for gauges conversion

    Trailing arm reinforcements are another difference. Depends on how accurate of clone you want to make, and in what sequence of the ~1500 cars. The Konradsheim book is very helpful in detailing the differences and the cost a relatively small amount compared to the cost of your restoration. It is also a great book to read regardless.

    The car you linked to is quite a special one-off RS, so even that would have substantial modifications relative to a "normal" lightweight, e.g. the S/T flares rather than RS and the 3.0 spoiler. Further compounding matters, that car has been restored, so you're copying something that is not exactly the same as original. Either way, I'd suggest contemplating whether you want a "tribute" or "clone" which in theory is the difference between something which reasonably approximates the experience of driving the car you are after and something which is an exact replica and indistinguishable in driving. There are some great threads on here which illustrate the rabbit hole of getting the minutia right, e.g. the quantity of undercarriage protection in the wheel wells. Looking at the photos, it looks like a larger '74-'75 flag mirror - was that original, a period improvement, or done by a subsequent owner? Interesting questions, or a waste of time? It is for certain a beautiful car and will be rewarding to emulate!

    FWIW, the correct S TBs and stacks along with a 019 pump are for sale on one of the forums, I forget which. In the US, Eurometrix can convert your E stacks to RS specs. It isn't cheap!

    I notice you have a 2.2 E pump , cannot be converted to an RS pump , a 2.4 pump is needed for the conversion .

    Hi Mikkoh (and others if interested...),

    I payed for 2.2S space cam +/- €650,- what is with the current exchange rate more or less the same in $$$

    Can someone confirm this? I have also 911E where I can use the MFI set but probably will not be able to find spare 2.4 pump that easily.

    2.4 T pumps are relatively easy to find . And why don't you believe me , an RS 3 dimensional cam does not fit in a 2.2 MFI pump .
