Thread: Ray Thackwell’s 911ST

    Ray Thackwell’s 911ST

Recently I was lucky enough to meet up with Lisa (Ray’s daughter)
She brought on along some of the trophy’s that Ray won using his 2.3 ST.
He also confirmed that he bought it straight off the boat from Porsche and that all Hamilton’s did was to fit some ‘spats’ and paint it white for the castrol livery.
I know pretty much have all the history of the car.
    Factory built.
    RHD.
    2.3 twin spark.
    LSD.
    Roll bar.
    Light weight.
Raced by Ray for 2 years and then sold to Dr Leo Stubber, who continued to race it into the late 70’s before selling it on.
Maybe the time has come for me to do the same.

So a big thank you to Lisa and Ray for taking the time to share their experience with me.

Originally built for the 1970 Rally New Zealand, the car was in fact diverted to Australia where it had a very successful racing career, in the hands of Ray Thackwell and Dr Leo Stubber.

The car’s circuit racing career lasted from 1970 to 1978 and out of 132 starts, it finished on the podium on no less than 100 occasions, which included 41 first places and a number of championship wins.

After its racing career the car eventually returned to what it was built for, Rallying, with it’s previous Australian owner taking 2nd in Class B on the Porsche Club Rally in 1994, 3rd in Class A on the Porsche Club Rally 1995, together with strong placings in the AEM Classic Rallies in 1994, 95 and 96.

In 2000 the car arrived in the UK and proceeded to undergo a restoration, since when it has proven popular and successful on many European events including The Rally of the Lakes, Ireland in 2002 and 2003, the Eiffel Classic Rally, Germany in 2003 and 2004 and the Isle of Bute Historic Festival, Scotland in 2003. In 2006 it also appeared at the Goodwood Festival of Speed.

The car can still be seen at rally demonstration events today, having been guest driven by Jurgen Barth on the rally stage at Race Retro in 2008 & by Björn Waldegĺrd.

John, Do you know who ( a New Zealander ? ) originally ordered the car from the factory?
It wouldn't be a Mr Tim Bailey by any chance. He owned a car dealership named Continental Cars and was the original Porsche Licenced Dealer here in NZ and was a pretty good Race and Rally driver here in the 60's -70's.
    Kind regards

My understanding after a relatively recent conversation with Alan Hamilton on this matter is that the car was ordered directly by Ray Thackwell and in Alan's words "but I remember that I was considerably involved in this car as Ray required modifications which made it illegal for the Touring Car Championship. Ray was ambivalent about the strict interpretation of the rules as he only wanted to race in WA where the rules were not strictly enforced. The main difference was his requirement for fibreglass body parts to replace the steel ones. Chassis specs were as for the other 911 race cars. The car was built to Thackwell’s requirements by the factory and shipped as a complete race car to Melbourne and duly forwarded to Thackwell."

He thought, but was not certain, that it was ordered via Colin Giltrap

Ray Thackwell was Mike Thackwell father.

    Ray later owned this:

    1973 2.8-LITRE PORSCHE 911RSR CARRERA

    Chassis No. 9113600784

    Mike Thackwell
    Yet another great KIWI
( noticed the Aussies weren't mentioning it )

Ray and his family emigrated from NZ to Australia (Perth) in the late 1960's and this will possibly explain why the car was ordered via Colin Giltrap (thanks Hugh.)
