'71 turn signals flashing too fast

I couldn't find a thread that has this same issue so I figured I would start a new one.

I replaced the hazard switch in my '71 a few weeks ago since the plastic fingers holding it in the dash were broken. I then found out the wiring was different with the new switch (original was NLA) and ended up moving the ground pin over one slot in the connector. In the course of debugging the hazard switch I realized that neither the old nor the new switch would get the hazard lights to work (with the corresponding change to the connector) so I would just get one click from the relay but no lights, and the turn signals didn't work either. After studying the diagrams I decided to just replace the flasher relay since mine smelled like it had had the smoke let out and there were signs someone had been in there before.

Today I installed the new flasher relay and success! I have hazard warning flashers again. But... when I tried the turn signals they blink way too fast. I looked around for burnt out bulbs but they all seem to be functioning fine. The hazards blink at about the rate I think the turn signals should, but the turn signals blink so fast they hardly turn off. Left and right seems to be separate on the indicators in the gage, but each one blinks fast, not just left or right.

Any ideas what could be the problem? Does the new relay have a different resistance or something? Do I need different bulbs? They used to work alright. I do have the R-style taillights, not the standard ones.

Could you point me in the direction of one of those?

I figured the stock type relay would be the safer bet but I'm open to solid state. I'm mostly confused why the hazards work alright but not the turn signals. I guess there's too much current going through with the turn signals (bimetallic strip heating up too quickly) so maybe I have a short somewhere.

Edit: stupid me- I didn't notice you could choose 4 or 3 pins. I just ordered one. I'll let you know how it goes.

similar thread on pelican points to a couple things to check before trying a new flasher: grounds, bulbs, then finally swap flasher relay. (http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsc...tors-73-t.html)

have you tried fully disconnecting each corner assembly to try and isolate if one connection is causing the fast flashing?

So I have a 5W? in front (12V P21/5W) and 18W in back. The electronic flasher relay will get here next week but the car is in the shop now for a while so it will be some time before I can see whether the electronic flasher is all I need.

    Update:

I stopped by TLG and installed the electronic flasher relay today. With the key on but without starting the engine the turn signals flash at normal speed and the hazards flash at the same speed, but the tach arrows only seem to illuminate for the turn signals, not the hazards. It could have been they were just dim and I couldn't see them with my sunglasses on, or maybe it's the new hazard switch, but the turn signals and hazard lights both work so I think I'll consider this task done.
