68 ALU cases are the best, they have all the late model chain case mounting and did come with Mag chain cases, studs and hollow dowels, the best IMO.

I have a 68 911L with aluminum case. would like to know what a hollow dowel is for. I assume you mean the chain box's are made of Mag instead of Aluminum. And how is the chain case mounting different from earlier engines. Etc. thanks Chris. by the way I plan to hot rod this engine to a high compression 2.5 twin plug. (70.4 X 87.5 )

I will be doing this with LN cylinders that can take 87.5 pistons without cutting the case. Want to leave the case original

Chris, through '67 the aluminum chain cases were mounted to the crankcase with three M8 fasteners, plus two solid dowel pins for precise attachment and anti-shuffle.
As of '68 all chain cases were magnesium, and mounted to the crankcase with five M8 fasteners, two of which were surrounded by "hollow dowels" for the same attachment and anti-shuffle purpose.

Thanks Jon I did know the breather cap on top of the case was Mag on the 68 aluminum case but it is good to know all what the factory was doing in that ever changing period.

Interesting! I have an early 68T alu case, do I have to use mag chain boxes or does the early(65-67) alu boxes fit?

The early aluminum chain boxes have only three M8 fastener holes for mounting to the crankcase.
Your early 68T alu crankcase has five threaded M8 fasteners per side, correct?
With some alterations you could make them fit, but there's no practical reason or advantage for doing this.

I checked my case now and it is the old style with 3 M8 and 2 solid separate dowels. I guess the change came with the mag (weaker)case?
